Thunder (Japanese: かみなり Thunder) is a damage-dealing Electric-type move introduced in Generation I. It is TM25 from Generation I to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and TM38 in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, it is TR09.

Effect

Generation I

Thunder deals damage and has a 10% chance of paralyzing the target. Thunder cannot paralyze Electric-type Pokémon.

Generations II to V

Thunder now has a 30% chance to paralyze the target. Thunder can now paralyze Electric-type Pokémon.

When used during rain, Thunder bypasses accuracy checks to always hit, unless the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Dig or Dive. When used during harsh sunlight, its accuracy is reduced to 50%.

Thunder can hit Pokémon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, Bounce, and Sky Drop.

Thunder can be used as part of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining extra two appeal points if any of the moves Charge, Lock-On or Rain Dance was used in the prior turn.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl only, due to a glitch, when used in rain it has a 30% chance to hit a target that has used Protect or Detect.

Generation VI onward

Thunder's power was reduced from 120 to 110. It can no longer paralyze Electric-type Pokémon once again, due to them now being immune to paralysis.

Thunder can be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if either Charge or Rain Dance was used in the prior turn.

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Thunder is a move with 24 base power, 73% accuracy, and 9 PP. It damages an enemy in front of the user, and might inflict paralysis on it. Like in main series, this move can hit a Pokémon in middle of Fly or Bounce, and its accuracy is affected by weather.

In Explorers of Time and Darkness, the move's PP is decreased to 7.

In Explorers of Sky, the move's power is raised to 45.

In Gates to Infinity, Thunder hits enemies further away when used by a Gigantic Pokémon.

Super Smash Bros. series

Pikachu uses Thunder as its down special move. It summons a thunderbolt from the sky to attack opponents on the ground. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, Thunder now summons a cloud that fires the thunderbolt, making the attack's range shorter. Additionally, the thunderbolt now acts a Meteor Smash.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pichu also uses Thunder as its down special move. It functions similarly to Pikachu's Thunder, although it strikes multiple times. If the thunderbolt hits Pichu, it will take damage.
