Wyrdeer (Japanese: アヤシシ Ayashishi) is a dual-type Normal/Psychic Pokémon introduced during Generation VIII, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it evolves from Stantler after using Psyshield Bash in the agile style at least 20 times.

Biology

Wyrdeer is a snow deer-like Pokémon. Its body is mostly gray with white spots, as well as white fur on its lower legs, underside, round tail, eyebrows, and mane, the latter resembling a beard. Wyrdeer has large, golden antlers, the shape of which resembles radio antennae. Each of these antlers has one black orb near the base. Wyrdeer also has a brown nose and black cloven hooves, as well as two tufts of fur on the back of each lower leg.

Wyrdeer is well-beloved by the people in the Hisui region due to its highly prized fur, which provides excellent insulation from the cold and is used to make clothing. By using the orbs on its antlers, Wyrdeer can unleash psychic powers strong enough to distort space, and also create invisible barriers for protection. It also uses the antlers to lead Stantler herds and search for safe paths to travel. Wyrdeer's sturdy legs allow it to gallop and dash across the land, and jump over any obstacle in its way. Wyrdeer is implied to be extinct in the present day, Stantler are said to be no longer capable of evolving into Wyrdeer and they're not known to be found anywhere.

A special Wyrdeer is also worshiped due to being descended from one of the ten ancient Pokémon who received a blessing from Arceus and serves as a Ride Pokémon. The people in Hisui use the Celestica Flute to call for his aid. He resides in the Obsidian Fieldlands, watched over by the warden Mai.

Wyrdeer and its pre-evolved form, Stantler, are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Psyshield Bash.

Trivia

• Wyrdeer, along with Ursaluna and Kleavor, are the first cross-generational Evolutions that evolve from the original form rather than the regional form to be introduced since Sylveon in Generation VI.
  • Since their pre-evolutions cannot evolve into them in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and because both Ursaluna (through a different form) and Kleavor are obtainable in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, this makes Wyrdeer the only one of these Pokémon that is only available in that game through transfer from Pokémon HOME, along with Ursaluna's original form, though they can be obtained with its origin mark and possibly, the player's Trainer ID by transferring their pre-Evolution to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, evolving them there and returning it back.

  • They are both Normal/Psychic Pokémon.
  • They both have Sap Sipper as a Hidden Ability.

Origin

Wyrdeer seems to be based on different deer species, mainly the Yezo sika deer and the reindeer. The former is a subspecies of the sika deer native to Hokkaido, the region of Japan which Hisui is based on. Much like how Wyrdeer is treasured by Hisuian people because their fur is a useful clothing material, the Yezo sika deer is considered very important to the Ainu people as their hide is essential for clothing.

Wyrdeer's white beard-like mane and eyebrows resemble elderly Ainu men, and also the stereotypical representations of a wise old men, wizards, and Santa Claus. Its antlers are similar to Stantler's and as such may be based on shishi-odoshi, more specifically the medama fūsen, also known as eyespot balloons or scare-eye balloons. The way Wyrdeer's antlers branch perpendicularly also resembles Yagi antennae.

Name origin

Wyrdeer may be a combination of wyrd (Anglo-Saxon concept roughly equivalent to fate or destiny), weird, and deer.

Ayashishi may be a combination of 怪しい ayashii (strange/weird) and 鹿 kanoshishi or shishi (archaism for deer). This uncommon reading was likely chosen so the name stays similar to Stantler's Japanese name オドシシ Odoshishi, which seems to reference 鹿威し shishi-odoshi (a device used to scare deer and other animals away).
