Solar Beam (Japanese: ソーラービーム Solar Beam), formatted as SolarBeam prior to Pokémon X and Y, is a damage-dealing Grass-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TM22 from Generation I to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as well as in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, TM45 in Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, TM11 in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and is TM168 in Generation IX.

Effect

0151Mew.png This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Is the power of Solar Beam affected by shadowy aura (like it is by rain, hail and sandstorm)?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Generation I

SolarBeam does nothing on the turn it is selected, other than state that the user has taken in sunlight. On the following turn, SolarBeam will inflict damage, PP will be deducted from it, and it will count as the last move used. Once SolarBeam is selected, the user will not be able to switch out until it is disrupted or fully executed.

If SolarBeam is not fully executed, PP will not be deducted from it, and it will not count as the last move used. If the target uses Mirror Move during the turn that the user takes in sunlight, Mirror Move will copy the move that the user executed immediately before using SolarBeam (or fail if it can't).

Sleep, freezing, partial trapping, and flinching will pause, but not disrupt, the duration of SolarBeam.

In Pokémon Stadium, Mirror Move will copy SolarBeam on either of the turns it takes to execute.

Generation II

SolarBeam will not need a turn to charge if used during harsh sunlight. It will have its power halved if used during rain.

If the user is prevented from attacking with SolarBeam during harsh sunlight by conditions such as flinching, paralysis, and confusion, then PP will still be deducted regardless, due to the fact that SolarBeam was designed as a two-turn attack.

If SolarBeam is disrupted from succeeding due to conditions such as flinching, paralysis, or confusion, the entire move will now be cancelled rather than simply paused.

Generations III and IV

SolarBeam will also have its power halved if used during hail, fog or when a sandstorm is raging.

If a Pokémon holding a Power Herb uses SolarBeam, it will consume the Power Herb to execute SolarBeam in one turn. If there is harsh sunlight, the Power Herb will not be consumed.

SolarBeam can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 4 bonus appeal points if Growth or Sunny Day was used in the previous turn.

Generations V and VI

A minor change shows the charging half of SolarBeam's animation happening even if it is sunny, where previously it did not. The actual attack will happen immediately after.

Strong winds have no effect on Solar Beam's power.

Solar Beam can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if Sunny Day was used in the prior turn.

Generation VII

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Solar Beam's power was increased from 120 to 200.

Generation VIII onwards

Solar Beam's power was changed back to 120.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time and Darkness and Sky, SolarBeam is a move with 24 base power, 100% accuracy, and 9 PP. This attack hits enemy in the front, cutting corners. Like in the main series, this move will fire instantly during sunny weather, and its damage is halved if the weather is rain, sandstorm, or hail. Being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked, and has a hidden multiplier that doubles damage dealt.

Super Smash Bros. series

Ivysaur uses Solar Beam as part of Pokémon Trainer's Final Smash, Triple Finish.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Solar Beam is Venusaur's second move. It is obtained by reaching level 7 as Ivysaur and upgrading Razor Leaf into it instead of Petal Dance. The user fires a beam of light in the designated direction, damaging enemies over time. It is randomly divided into several distinct hits, with 10 ticks of damage divided among these hits. Half of the ticks deal damage solely based on the enemies' Max HP. At level 13, the cast and cooldown times are reduced by 3s.
