Safeguard (Japanese: しんぴのまもり Mysterious Safeguard) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. It was TM20 from Generation III to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and TM19 in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Can a disobedient Pokémon put itself to sleep while under the effect of Safeguard (in each generation)?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Generation II

Safeguard prevents the user and its allies from being inflicted with non-volatile status conditions and confusion for five turns. Existing status conditions are not cured by Safeguard and have their effects as normal.

Safeguard does not protect from self-inflicted sleep from Rest, but does prevent confusion due to fatigue after using Outrage, Petal Dance, or Thrash. Safeguard does not prevent a Pokémon becoming confused due to its held Berserk Gene.

Generation III

Safeguard no longer prevents confusion due to fatigue after using Outrage, Petal Dance, or Thrash. It also does not prevent allies from being confused by a held Figy, Wiki, Mago, Aguav or Iapapa Berry.

Safeguard prevents a Pokémon from being made drowsy by Yawn, but will not prevent it from falling asleep due to its effect if it is already drowsy.

Safeguard does not protect the user from being inflicted with a status condition by making contact with a Pokémon with the Ability Effect Spore, Static, Flame Body or Poison Point.

Generation IV

Safeguard prevents allies from being confused by a Figy, Wiki, Mago, Aguav or Iapapa Berry (regardless of whether it is consumed as a held item, via Fling, or via Bug Bite or Pluck) as well as being burned or poisoned by a held Flame Orb or Toxic Orb.

Safeguard is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if it is hit by Defog (even if it was used by an ally).

Generation V onwards

Safeguard no longer prevents allies from being confused by a Figy, Wiki, Mago, Aguav or Iapapa Berry (regardless of whether it is consumed as a held item, via Fling, or via Bug Bite or Pluck). Safeguard no longer prevents allies from being burned or poisoned by a held Flame Orb or Toxic Orb. Safeguard now protects the user from being inflicted with a status condition by making contact with a Pokémon with the Ability Effect Spore, Static, Flame Body or Poison Point. Safeguard can be bypassed by Infiltrator.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Safeguard, the user's Speed stat is raised by one stage.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In Red Rescue Team, Blue Rescue Team, Safeguard is a move with 15 PP that ignores accuracy and evasion checks. It targets all team members in the same room, giving them Safeguard status condition for 16-20 turns, which prevents from receiving status conditions that are considered bad (including sleep from Drowsy), as well as prevent move seals - but it won't cure already existing status conditions. In hallways, this move targets Pokémon up two tiles away (or one in one-tile darkness). This move is affected by Snatch and Taunt.

In Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, the move's PP has been decreased to 13.

The user grants both the targeted ally and themself a shield for 3s; purging hindrances and making both immune to hindrances for 3s. At level 10, the shield value is increased.

Trivia

Safeguard ending in Battle Revolution.
  • Safeguard displays an animation when it ends in Pokémon Battle Revolution.
  • Despite having distinct effects in the games, Reflect, Light Screen, Barrier, Protect and Safeguard are often depicted in the anime seemingly sharing the same effect that Protect has in the games (protecting the user from most the effect of moves).
