Snatch (Japanese: よこどり Snatch) is a non-damaging Dark-type move introduced in Generation III. It was TM49 in Generation III and Generation IV.

Effect

Snatch is an increased priority move. After being used, if another Pokémon (including an ally) attempts to use a beneficial status move, the user of Snatch steals the move and uses the move itself instead of the move's original user.

Generations III and IV

Snatch will steal the first susceptible move that is used by any other Pokémon in the same turn. If more than one Pokémon use Snatch in the same turn, the fastest Pokémon's Snatch will activate first, but the stolen move will in turn be stolen by the next fastest Pokémon's Snatch (such that only the slowest user of Snatch will receive a stolen effect in the end).

If Acupressure is stolen, it will always be applied to the user of Snatch regardless of the move's original target. If Psych Up is stolen, it will target the Pokémon the move was most recently stolen from.

Generation V to VII

Snatch no longer steals moves that were stolen by another Pokémon's Snatch on the same turn. The order in which moves are stolen is the same as the order in which Snatch was executed.

Acupressure and Psych Up can no longer be stolen. All moves that can be stolen either affect only the user or affect the user's entire team.

Rest and Swallow can now only be stolen if they would have an effect when used by the original user (regardless of whether or not they would have an effect on the user of Snatch).

If Swallow is stolen and the user of Snatch is not under the effects of Stockpile, it will nonetheless recover 25% of its max HP.

Snatch cannot steal Z-Moves, even if it could normally steal their base move.

If powered up by a Darkinium Z into Z-Snatch, the user's Speed stat rises two stages.

Generation VIII onwards

Snatch cannot be selected in a battle.

Affected moves

The following moves can be stolen by Snatch:

The Generation VIII moves Clangorous Soul, No Retreat, Stuff Cheeks, Life Dew, Victory Dance, Lunar Blessing, and Take Heart are affected by Snatch according to the moves' data. Since Snatch cannot be used in any of the Generation VIII or IX core series games, they are not included in the table.

The user gains the Snatch status condition, allowing them to steal certain moves from any Pokémon on the floor, ally or enemy. There can be only one Pokémon on the floor with this status; another Pokémon using Snatch will remove the status from whoever currently has it. The Snatch status lasts for 4-5RBTDS / 6SMD turns.

Moves that are affected by Snatch are mostly the same as in the main series. Imprison cannot be snatched unlike the main series games. Interestingly, in the Explorers series, the list of affected moves follows closely with the Generation V games (for example, Psych Up cannot be snatched, while Aqua Ring, Healing Wish, Lucky Chant, Lunar Dance and Magnet Rise can).

Moves that would usually affect other teammates (e.g. Mist and Safeguard) will only affect the Pokémon with the Snatch status, even if that Pokémon was a teammate. The user will lose the Snatch status after snatching Rest, but will regain the status after waking up.
