A male and a female Meowstic with their ears unfolded
Meowstic is a bipedal, feline Pokémon whose appearance differs drastically between genders. Both genders have two tails, folded ears, a small collar of fur around the neck, and a tuft of fur on top of the head. On the inner surface of the tips of each ear, there is an eye-like organ with a ring at its center. This organ can emit psychic energy powerful enough to obliterate a 10-ton truck or tanker into dust. When Meowstic uses its abilities, the organ glows light blue. Meowstic usually keeps its ears folded at all times to keep its psychic powers in check, but it will unleash its power if threatened. Male and female Meowstic differ in various ways, most notably in their appearances, temperaments, and the moves they learn.
The male Meowstic is predominantly dark blue. Its eyes are green with light blue sclerae. The organ in its ears is green with a light blue ring. The tuft of fur between its ears is white and curves slightly to the side and the collar around its neck is white with several stray tufts of fur. It has pointed ears with white at the fold and on the tips of its ears; there is also a white ring near the tips of its ears. Its tails are also pointed with white tips and a white ring near the end. There is a tuft of fur on each hip and it has white paws. Male Meowstic has a strong defensive instinct, as it prefers to support its allies rather than attack despite being strong enough to blast away any opponent. It is willing to use its full power to protect itself or its partners. When a male Meowstic continues to emit its powerful psychic energy, it will damage its body as a side effect.
The female Meowstic is predominantly white. Its ears have no markings and curled tips and its eyes are red with yellow sclerae. The organ in its ears is red with a yellow ring. The tuft of fur on its head is blue and curled, as is the collar around its neck. Its tails are blue at the base and end in white, fluffy curls. There are blue, stocking-like markings around its paws and two tufts of fur on each hip. Female Meowstic is known to be a bit more selfish, aggressive, and aversive than its male counterpart. Should it not get what it wants, it will torment anyone with its psychic abilities. It generally has a stoic expression even when using its powers, and its unfriendliness is part of its charm. When it senses danger, it will unleash its psychic power at its maximum strength with no regard for its opponent.
Mega Meowstic's appearance combines the appearances of both variations of Meowstic; as such, there is no visual difference between a male and female Mega Meowstic. Its left half generally takes from female Meowstic, with dominantly white body fur, dark blue arm and leg, and a yellow eye; while its right half generally takes from male Meowstic, with dominantly dark blue fur, white arm and leg, and a green eye. Both eyes have pure white pupils and generally appear closed, but may open when Mega Meowstic unleashes its powers. Mega Meowstic's ears, in contrast, are always unfurled with their eye-like organs fully visible. The tufts of fur on top of Mega Meowstic's head and around its neck are long and spiky, and are both white and dark blue. Continuing the gender duality theme, Mega Meowstic has two tails, one ending in a curled tip like that of female Meowstic and one ending in a spiky tip like that of male Meowstic. Both tails are white with dark blue coloration near their bases.
Mega Meowstic's psychic powers allows it to compress or expand any object, overwhelming its opponents by folding space itself. Mega Meowstic levitates constantly using its psychic powers.
Despite not having any form differences, Mega Meowstic technically has two forms based on the gender of the Pokémon. These are displayed separately in the Pokémon HOMEPokédex.
Both male and female Meowstic appeared in Splitting Heirs!. The male was under the ownership of Blake, while the female was under the ownership of Heath.

Meowstic shares several similarities with Indeedee. Both are Psychic-type Pokémon with gender differences and have different movesets and Pokédex entries depending on their gender. Male Indeedee and Meowstic are easier to obtain in Sword, while female Indeedee and Meowstic are easier to obtain in Shield.
Out of all of the new KalosMega Evolutions that debuted in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Meowstic is the only Kalos Pokémon to gain a Mega Evolution in the Mega Dimension DLC instead of the base game of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Origin
Meowstic may be based on the domesticated variety of nekomata, a cat yōkai that comes from a domesticated cat who lives many years until its tail splits and it gains supernatural powers, much like how Meowstic evolves from Espurr. Nekomata were often depicted as standing on two legs like a human, and in at least one account shown to be wearing handkerchiefs on their heads, similar to Meowstic's hair tufts. Meowstic could also be based on bakeneko, which are cat yōkai similar to nekomata. It has eye-like patterns hidden under its ears which might be based on the concept of the third eye. In addition, its folded ears are similar to those of the Scottish Fold breed of cat. Its long ears may nod to an old name for the Scottish Fold, "lop-eared cat", named after the lop-eared rabbit.
Mega Meowstic combines aspects of both of Meowstic's gender forms in a single design. This might allude to genetic anomalies such as mosaicism or gynandromorphism, which produce specimens with similar visual traits, like being "parted" down the middle. It could more specifically be inspired by chimera cats, a genetic condition where two cat embryos fuse together and causing the resulting cat to have 2 different sets of DNA. This often resulting in two different fur patterns split down the middle of the cat. Alternatively, the combination of male and female may allude to the concept of intersexuality or intersexual mythical figures such as Hermaphroditus or Ardhanarishvara.
Name origin
Meowstic may be a combination of meow and mystic. It may also derive from stoic, referring to its generally emotionless facial expression.
Nyaonix may be a combination of ニャー nyā or ニャーオ nyāo (meow) and onyx (a type of mineral with a pattern similar to Meowstic's), ὄνυξ ónyx (Greek for claw), psionics, or Nyx (Greek goddess of the night).
