The ultimate weapon (Japanese: 最終兵器 ultimate weapon) is a machine created by AZ 3,000 years prior to the events of Pokémon X and Y, located in Geosenge Town. It is featured heavily in those games and is referenced in both Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It has been referred to as "The Device That Grants Life" by Team Flare.[1]

The original machine used for resurrection before it was turned into the ultimate weapon

The machine resembles the Eternal Flower held by AZ's Floette, and it appears to be made of a crystalline material. The machine was powered by the life force of Pokémon, whose graves line Route 10.[2][3][4][5] This energy source was later used by the Devon Corporation and named Infinity Energy.[6][7] The ultimate weapon also lead to the creation of Mega Power through the reborn Floette.

History

Background

AZ activating the ultimate weapon

3,000 years prior the events of Pokémon X and Y, the king of Kalos, AZ, was forced to send his beloved Floette to fight in the war of Kalos, which ultimately led to its death. Determined to bring Floette back no matter what it took, AZ built a machine to bring it back to life, powered by the life force of other Pokémon. The exposure to the power of the machine also granted both AZ and Floette immortality and made AZ a giant as a result.

AZ however, still wanted revenge on those who had killed his beloved Pokémon, so he turned the machine into the ultimate weapon, which he used to end the great war by blasting both sides. The graves of the Pokémon sacrificed to power the ultimate weapon now line Kalos Route 10.[2][3][4][5] When AZ's Floette realized that so many lives were lost merely to restore its own, it left AZ. The key to activate the weapon was taken by AZ as he left Kalos to wander aimlessly around the world, and the weapon itself was buried deep underground by AZ's brother in an attempt to prevent it from being used ever again.

Professor Sycamore theorizes that Mega Stones originate from special stones, potentially Evolution stones, that were irradiated by the power of XerneasX/YveltalY/bothZA that was fired from the ultimate weapon.

2,000 years prior, a powerful man approached AZ and asked for his help with a way to protect Kalos. Instead of making another device that would take from others like the ultimate weapon, AZ decided to build one that would share the eternal life he had bestowed on his Eternal Flower Floette as a way to make up for his mistakes. That device would be known as Ange, which was embedded into Prism Tower.

Pokémon X and Y

In the present day, Lysandre, the boss of Team Flare, aims to use the ultimate weapon to destroy all life—including Pokémon—to create a more beautiful world where people don't have to fight over resources. However, it could only be reactivated with the power of the Kalos Power Plant, XerneasX/YveltalY, and the key possessed by AZ.

To accomplish this lofty goal, Team Flare occupies the Kalos Power Plant and diverts enough electricity to the weapon to cause a blackout in Lumiose City. This electricity is used along with the power of the Legendary Pokémon to reactivate the weapon, allowing it to surface once again. However, when the player catches XerneasX/YveltalY, it drains most of the energy from the weapon. After being defeated, Lysandre attempts to use what little power still remains to make the player and their friends immortalX/destroy Team Flare Secret HQ and everyone insideY, but the heroes manage to escape before the HQ is hit. The weapon then blasts Geosenge Town, heavily damaging itself, burying the HQ under the rubble, and leaving a huge crater in the center of the town.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

While the machine does not appear in the games, it plays a significant role due to the research it inspired. Long before the events of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Mr. Stone's grandfather, the former president of the Devon Corporation, researched the ultimate weapon. Inspired by its abilities, he aimed to harness the same energy to help both people and Pokémon. This research ultimately led to the development of and discovery of Infinity Energy.[6][7]

Team MagmaOR/Team AquaAS also researched the ultimate weapon, resulting in Project AZOTH.[8] This project involves the Primal Reversion of GroudonOR/KyogreAS to restore the world to its original state. The ultimate goal of Team Magma is to expand the landmass, providing humanity with more space to build and develop civilization. In contrast, Team Aqua aims to eliminate human civilization and return the world to its original state, allowing Pokémon to live free from the impact of humanity's progress.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

In a different timeline, Lysandre succeeded in launching the ultimate weapon, however he passed out and ended up in the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon timeline, where he joined Team Rainbow Rocket as one of its admins. He will then have the player push one of two buttons, one of which activates the ultimate weapon and one of which opens the path to Giovanni. The ultimate weapon is activated regardless of which button the player chooses, but after defeating Lysandre, the player can press the other button and deactivate the weapon, saving Alola.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Following the ultimate weapon being fired in Pokémon X and Y, Zygarde appeared to protect all living creatures from the ultimate weapon's blast, including Lysandre, exhausting its own power as a result. After being saved, Lysandre, now an amnesiac vagrant known simply as "L", worked with Zygarde to help restore its powers. The ultimate weapon's activation also caused the device embedded into the Prism Tower, Ange, to be awakened, sensing danger from the weapon.

The machine is mentioned in Team Flare's computer in the abandoned Lysandre Labs, explaining how Team Flare planned to use it to reduce the population of the world. Information gathered by Team Flare regarding the ultimate weapon is found as well, and the weapon was also mentioned as the reason for the reactivation of Ange. During Side Mission EX2, it's revealed that Team Flare considered using Mewtwo to power up their ultimate weapon and captured it at the Unknown Dungeon; however, since they were unable to Mega Evolve Mewtwo, "Project M" was scrapped. Mewtwo would remain in slumber at Lysandre Labs until the destruction of the Ange machine, plus Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y being brought by Paxton/Harmony near its presence.

Abilities

The ultimate weapon being fired

The machine was powered up by Pokémon's life energy. Along with energy, the machine must be activated with a key.

Before being turned into a weapon, the unnamed revival device would use the energy of other Pokémon to resurrect the deceased, granting them eternal life in the process. This process involves absorbing the life force of other Pokémon through the use of the standing stones that line Route 10 all the way to the ruins of Geosenge Town.[2][3][4][5] These stones usually emit energy, but when the machine is activated, that reverses, causing them to instead absorb the energy of whatever is attached to them.[9] The machine's primary ability is to convert life energy into its purest form, completely distilling it.[5] This life energy can be emitted in various forms, such as convection, radiation, and conduction. The transformed life energy is then redirected back into the deceased, effectively resurrecting them from the dead and granting them eternal life.[10] It was used 3,000 years ago by AZ to ressurect his Floette.

Team Flare intended to reactivate the ultimate weapon using the energy from XerneasX/YveltalY and the life force of Pokémon absorbed with the stones on Route 10,[11][12] firing a huge blast of power that flies up and falls back down into the planet. Lysandre Labs housed two buttons: a red and a blue one, one of them is for activating the ultimate weapon. Xerosic also had a remote capable of activating it. Additionally, Team Rainbow Rocket's Castle also housed two buttons, one for activating the ultimate weapon and one for stopping it. It was used 3000 years ago by AZ to put an end to the Kalos war and in Pokémon X and Y by Lysandre as part of Team Flare's plan to try and reduce the number of living things and create a "more beautiful world". Mega Stones also originated from certain stones, possibly Evolution stones, that were irradiated by the light of XerneasX/YveltalY/bothZA that was fired by the weapon 3,000 years ago. Even more Mega Stones were created when the weapon was fired again in the event of Pokémon X and Y. Mere exposure to the machine can extend a human's lifespan beyond their natural life expectancy, allowing them to live up to 3,000 years, as observed with AZ and L. Exposure may also grant incredible height, up to 9 feet tall.

The machine was featured heavily in The Redemption through flashbacks. Its backstory was detailed, showing AZ building it to revive his lost Floette, granting himself immortality in the process. He was later seen converting it into a weapon to destroy both sides of the great war, finally bringing it to an end.

Pokémon Evolutions

The ultimate weapon appeared in The Visionary, where Team Flare deployed it in Geosenge Town. Following Calem's victory over Lysandre, the Team Flare Boss decided to use the remaining energy in the weapon to grant Calem, his friends, and himself eternal life, firing it. The weapon's blast crashed back down onto the weapon itself, causing it to sink back into the ground while Calem and his friends escaped from the blast.

X & Y arc

The ultimate weapon was sought after by Team Flare, who planned to unleash its power onto the Kalos region. The machine contained an Absorber (Japanese: 吸収盤 Absorber) that can drain the life force of Pokémon to power the weapon.

Team Flare's plan consisted of capturing the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal so that they could drain their energy to power the machine. The two Legendary Pokémon appeared in Vaniville Town in An X-cuse to Come Out and Play, where they battled each other and caused panic and destruction to the unsuspecting townspeople. Team Flare observed the destruction from afar, but Xerosic noted that they had no actual methods of capturing the two Pokémon. Eventually, the two Pokémon ended their battle and left to parts unknown. In What Does Charmander Do When It Dozes, Xerosic found the dormant tree form of Xerneas at Route 8. By using the captured Vaniville townspeople as mind-controlled slaves, Team Flare managed to take Xerneas to their base in Quilladin Stands. After hooking the tree to the Absorber, Lysandre began the process of absorbing Xerneas's life force.

The Absorber in Pokémon Adventures

In Gyarados Changes, X traveled to the Team Flare Secret HQ to stop Team Flare's plan. After arriving at the ultimate weapon's control room, he battled Lysandre. X's attempt to stop the weapon from being activated ended in his defeat, but also caused Xerneas to awaken. When X's friends and a group of Gym Leaders arrived at Geosenge Town, they found the ultimate weapon emerging from underground. They attempted to keep the weapon from opening, but it still managed to fire on the Kalos region. Despite this, the combined efforts of X and his allies, as well as Xerneas absorbing back most of its power upon awakening, drained the weapon of enough power that no innocent lives were taken. As Team Flare went into hiding, they tried to use their influence over the media to make the public believe the Gym Leaders and the Vaniville Town children were responsible for the destruction caused by the weapon's blast, but this didn't fool everyone in Kalos.

The flower in Pokémon Adventures

In Zygarde Appears, Xerosic discovered that the stones on Route 10 were actually an ancient form of the Absorber used by AZ when he first used the ultimate weapon. Due to Xerneas destroying the Absorber when it awakened, he decided to use these Absorbers in place of the previous one. In Charizard Transforms, Team Flare gathered multiple Pokémon from the Pokémon Village to act as the power source, but they were defeated by Clemont, Bonnie, Viola, and Yvette before enough energy could be gathered for a second attempt. The four then proceeded to destroy the stones so that the ultimate weapon could never be used again.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Two more Absorbers appeared under the possession of the Devon Corporation. The Absorbers are taken to Sea Mauville, where Mr. Stone and Steven Stone used them to drain the life force of Sapphire's Blaziken and Emerald's Sceptile in their Mega Evolved states in Slowbro Has an Idea, so that the energy could be used to power a device called the dimensional shifter that would warp away an incoming meteoroid that threatened to destroy the planet.

A smaller, portable version of the Absorber was seen in PS611 in video footage contained at an old Pokémon Association science facility. This machine, nicknamed the "flower" (Japanese: flower), was a small cannon-like device with a barrel that was shaped like the ultimate weapon. This device was used in an attempt to drain Rayquaza of its life force in order to weaken and capture it for the Pokémon Association at the Embedded Tower.

Trivia

  • The "cannon" inside the weapon's petals has a different design depending on the version of the game: in Pokémon X, it is a blue orb, while in Pokémon Y, it is a red spike.
    • In the Pokémon Evolutions episode, The Visionary, the ultimate weapon is depicted in its design from Pokémon Y, despite the Legendary Pokémon caught by Calem being Xerneas instead of Yveltal.
    • In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a holographic screen in the abandoned Lysandre Labs depicts the ultimate weapon along with both of its "cannons". The blue orb is depicted next to Xerneas' tree and the red spike next to Yveltal's cocoon. This implies that both of them exist in either version of Pokémon X and Y, with the orb using Xerneas' power and the spike using Yveltal's.
  • The ultimate weapon's ability to destroy lives is reflected by Yveltal, as both have the power to take life. This is contrasted by Ange and Xerneas, which both have the power to give life.
  • Celosia, AZ, and Mr. Stone state that when the machine was powered, it was done so to fire (similar to what Lysandre does in Pokémon X and Y);[2][3][4] however, the File 2 entry at Lysandre Labs states that it was powered to revive AZ's Floette.[5] It is unclear whether this is a mistake or an implication that the device was fueled twice.
    • During the climax of Pokémon X and Y, it is repeatedly stated that when AZ fired the ultimate weapon, he powered it with the life energy of other Pokémon, which caused his resurrected Floette to leave him. However, Professor Sycamore says in the post-game that the energy fired at the time came from XerneasX/YveltalY.[13][14]
  • The ultimate weapon shares some similarities with Professor Sada'sS/Professor Turo'sV time machine in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet:
    • They were both built by humans who wanted to use them for their own selfish desires, but not exactly for evil means.
    • They're both powerful machines that posed a huge threat to their respective regions; Kalos for the ultimate weapon and Paldea for the time machine.
    • They're both powered up by energy connected to Legendary Pokémon; Xerneas'sX/Yveltal'sY Infinity Energy for the ultimate weapon; and Terapagos's Terastal energy for the time machine.
