Shell Smash (Japanese: からをやぶる Shell Break) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation V.

Effect

Shell Smash decreases the user's Defense and Special Defense stat by one stage, but increases the user's Attack, Special Attack, and Speed by two stages each.

Shell Smash is a part of Contest Spectacular combination and using it will cause Baton Pass and Electro Ball to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Shell Smash, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Shell Smash is Crustle's first move. It is obtained by evolving from Dwebble at level 4 and upgrading Rock Slide into it instead of Rock Tomb. The user smashes his shell, setting his Defense and Sp. Defense to 0, gaining a boost to his Attack and Sp. Attack equal to 40% of the Defense and Sp. Defense lost, respectively. Defense and Sp. Defense not from base stats, i.e. from items and buffs (including the user's passive) are exempt. The user also gains a significant speed boost. At level 11, the boost is equal to 50% of the Defense and Sp. Defense.

Trivia

  • Shell Smash causes the greatest overall base stat changes of any move from no stat changes at all, with 8.
    • However, Belly Drum can surpass a +8 stat change if the user already has at least a -3 change in Attack, capping at a +12 change if executed from -6 Attack.
  • Huntail can use this move, even though it no longer has a visible shell after evolving from Clamperl.
