Zinnia (Japanese: ヒガナ Higana) is a mysterious Draconid woman and a Pokémon Trainer from Hoenn. She is described as a special person who holds the key to the Delta Episode in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, on a trip to accomplish her objectives.

Zinnia uses Dragon-type Pokémon in battle, including a Salamence she can Mega Evolve into Mega Salamence using her Mega Anklet. She also travels with a female Whismur nicknamed Aster (Japanese: シガナ Shigana). She is the only character in the games to have the Trainer class Lorekeeper (Japanese: でんしょうしゃ Lorekeeper).

Appearance

Zinnia has fair skin, medium height, and a somewhat thin build. She has chin-length satin black hair and crimson red eyes. Her default attire features a ragged white cloak with black shoulder pads, gray short shorts with a red rope around the hips serving as her belt, a tight black top with two red crescent lunar symbols on her chest, a pair of knee length gray socks and open toed gray boots. Additional equipment features a spherical red hair tie, as well as a blue Mega Anklet on her right leg, where the Key Stone is attached. An alternate palette of her default appearance was introduced in Pokémon Masters EX, where the tank top is gray with yellow lunar markings engraved at the breast area. The cape is deep black, and the petal rims above the sleeves are red. The shorts are black with yellow rope linings. The open-toe short boots are black, while the knee length socks are also black. She also retains the Mega Anklet on her right leg, where the Key Stone is attached, which is white.

Zinnia's alternate outfit was first seen in Pokémon Masters EX, which is titled the Special Costume. Her head mans a black top hat with a purple ribbon surrounding it. She wears a black robe with white lines and stars engraved on it. A white shirt bearing silk is under the robe, and she is equipped with white gloves. The lower portion of the attire acts like a mini-skirt in a dark brown color, and her legs wear faded brown leggings with tall black combat boots. She wears a monocle on her left eye. The alternate color for her Special Costume features the top hat, robe, and boots being white. The skirt is red, while the silk short under the robe and leggings are satin black, and the gloves on both hands are a deeper black.

In the core series games

Zinnia makes three cameo appearances prior to the Delta Episode, disguised as a Team Magma GruntOR/Team Aqua GruntAS. She is first seen after the player exits Petalburg Woods on the way to Rustboro City. Her second appearance is on Mt. Chimney, where she is fighting against ArchieOR or MaxieAS and tries to stop him before he arrives to MaxieOR/ArchieAS. Her third appearance is during the montage cutscene in Mossdeep City after the player saves Hoenn from Primal GroudonOR/KyogreAS.

Zinnia in Granite Cave

After the player defeats Steven and becomes Champion, Zinnia is shown in a cutscene discarding her team's uniform. She then meets the player at their home before breaking into Professor Birch's home and stealing Brendan/May's Key Stone. Later, when the player visits Granite Cave looking for a Meteorite Shard on Steven's request, she appears studying the cave's ancient painting. After a short conversation, Zinnia asks to battle with the player. Once defeated, she will give the player the Meteorite Shard they were after before leaving.

At the Meteor Falls, while looking for another Meteorite Shard, the player and Steven learn from an old Draconid woman that Zinnia joined Team MagmaOR/Team AquaAS and manipulated them in the hopes of having GroudonOR/KyogreAS resurrected in order to call Rayquaza back to the world to destroy the meteoroid, being fully aware of the fact that her actions would risk the lives of many people and Pokémon. However, as the player had managed to stop the super-ancient Pokémon, she had been forced to change her plan.

Zinnia makes another appearance at Mossdeep Space Center, listening in on Professor Cozmo's plan to send the oncoming meteoroid to another dimension using technology powered by the Meteorite Shards. Believing this plan will doom the world of another dimension to destruction, she destroys the device, then steals the Key Stone from the head of the team she had joined and challenges the player to meet her at the Sky Pillar.

Zinnia at the Sky Pillar

After the player secures permission to enter the Sky Pillar from Wallace, Zinnia explains the lore of the Draconids as they ascend the tower together. At the top floor, she uses the stolen Key Stones to summon Rayquaza to the Sky Pillar, but her plan fails when Rayquaza does not Mega Evolve despite her efforts. Just as she falls into despair, the Meteorite the player has been carrying for much of the game activates and is consumed by Rayquaza, granting it its missing power. Once the player has captured Rayquaza and added it to their party, Zinnia teaches it Dragon Ascent, then challenges the player to one last battle (which the player does not need to win to progress).

Once the player has gone into space with Mega Rayquaza, destroyed the meteoroid and battled Deoxys, Zinnia disappears from the Sky Pillar. She leaves behind a note with Aster thanking the player for their help. Later at Meteor Falls, her grandmother tells her that she should find her own purpose in life now that she is freed from her lifelong duty. She agrees and leaves her Salamencite with the player before departing. Zinnia's whereabouts after this point are unknown.

Aster

When she is not in disguise, Zinnia is usually accompanied by a Whismur nicknamed Aster (Japanese: シガナ Shigana). Zinnia occasionally addresses her like a daughter, and Aster occasionally makes cries of "Mum" (Japanese: ママー Mama) to Zinnia.

Aster seems to have been named after someone close to Zinnia who has passed away. According to an interview with Shigeru Ohmori in the June 2015 issue of Nintendo Dream, Aster was a person with special powers who held the position of Lorekeeper before Zinnia.[6]

None of Aster's moves are known.

Young Zinnia

Pokémon Evolutions

Zinnia appeared in The Wish, where she met May at the Sky Pillar and told her the lore of the Draconid people. At the top of the tower, Zinnia summoned Rayquaza in order to destroy the giant meteorite that was threatening Hoenn. However, Rayquaza lacked the energy to Mega Evolve, causing Zinnia to fall into despair. Thanks to May's Meteorite, however, Rayquaza was able to regain the energy it required for Mega Evolution. Zinnia then allowed May to take her place in battling and catching Rayquaza, a role that Zinnia had prepared herself for since childhood. Following this, Zinnia challenged May to a battle as her final duty as the Lorekeeper of the Draconid people.

Prior to Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Zinnia was a member of the Draconid people and, like the rest, greatly admired Lorekeeper Aster. When Aster was killed during Devon's attempt to capture and subdue Rayquaza, Zinnia swore vengeance against the company and was later appointed as Aster's successor by the village elder. Most of the Draconid people, however, still mourning Aster and seeing Zinnia mixing her own agendas with the role, did not truly acknowledge her. As the prophecy of another great meteor was near, Zinnia became desperate and first sent her Salamance to the facility holding Rayquaza. Although it had the hiccup of attacking and being beaten by Ruby, Salamence was nonetheless able to accomplish its mission, and Rayquaza was released from the Pokémon Association's grip. Next, she intended to bring out both Kyogre and Groudon in order to lure out Rayquaza, so she could bond with it. To do so, she infiltrated Team Magma and tipped Maxie of the Blue and Red Orbs before departing. Unfortunately for her, Rayquaza would instead soar with Norman and Ruby temporarily in order to stop the catastrophic battle between the legendary Pokémon.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Zinnia debuts in this arc. She is first encountered at the Sky Pillar, where she meets Ruby as he attempts to ascend it alongside Latios. Believing him to be an intruder, Zinnia attacks Ruby with her Salamence. Ruby manages to get the upper hand by tricking Zinnia's Whismur, Aster, with Pokéblocks, allowing him to pin Zinnia to the ground when she noticed Aster running off. He then demands to know who Zinnia is and what she knows about the upcoming crisis threatening to destroy Hoenn. Zinnia refuses to answer and escapes Ruby's grasp. She then uses her Mega Anklet to Mega Evolve her Salamence into a Mega Salamence. Ruby counters by Mega Evolving Latios into a Mega Latios with his Mega Bracelet. Ruby eventually manages to defeat Zinnia's Salamence, and reveals that he's aware that he encountered it before.

Zinnia realizes that the person who defeated her Salamence years ago in her attempt to free Rayquaza from the Pokémon Association must have actually been Ruby all along. She congratulates Ruby for his battling skills and agrees to tell him everything she knows. She reveals that in nine days time, a meteoroid will hit the planet, destroying it and its inhabitants. Zinnia also reveals her hatred for the Devon Corporation due to its choice in using science and technology to prevent the meteoroid from falling. As she prepares to leave to focus on her mission to stop the meteoroid, Zinnia thanks Ruby for his assistance in freeing Rayquaza and flies off. Later, she muses over the fact that Ruby received his Mega Bracelet from Steven Stone, the son of the Devon Corporation's president and angrily wonders where Devon got Key Stones from.

Zinnia as a Team Magma Grunt

Later, Zinnia arrives at Sea Mauville with several Team Aqua and Team Magma Grunts. She finds Mr. Stone using the Absorber to drain the life energy of Sapphire's Chic and Emerald's Sceptile in their Mega-Evolved states to power a machine that will be able to warp the meteoroid away. She reveals that she had spied on Team Magma and Team Aqua during their attempts to awaken Groudon and Kyogre and made allies with several of the Grunts of both teams. She and the Grunts attack everyone to steal the dimensional shifter that Mr. Stone was powering with Chic and Sceptile's life energy. Sapphire takes the dimensional shifter and attempts to run away, but Zinnia manages to take her Mega Bracelet with the Key Stone still inside. Zinnia then decides to go after Steven's Key Stone next and begins attacking him. Just as Zinnia gets the advantage in battle, Ruby arrives with his Mega Swampert Mumu and asks everyone to stop fighting.

Ruby then begins battling Zinnia. After being told by the Grunts that Sapphire had disappeared with the dimensional shifter, Zinnia decides to retreat. Before leaving, Zinnia attacks Steven in an attempt to take his Key Stone. She is stopped again by Ruby, who offers up his and Emerald's Mega Bracelets to Zinnia to convince her to leave. Zinnia accepts the bribe and leaves, but Ruby reveals he secretly stole a scroll when Zinnia wasn't looking.

At Mossdeep City, Zinnia finds the dimensional shifter outfitted inside a rocket that is in the process of being launched into space. She is attacked by Sapphire, who attempts to stop Zinnia from interfering with the launch. Zinnia is assisted by her Team Magma and Team Aqua allies, who battle Sapphire while Zinnia goes off to stop the rocket, which has already been launched. Sapphire evades her opponents and follows Zinnia onto the rocket, where they battle once more. Zinnia eventually defeats Sapphire by knocking her off of the rocket, giving Zinnia the opportunity to destroy the shifter and the rocket.

At Route 120, Zinnia finds Ruby and Sapphire riding on top of Rayquaza after successfully befriending it. Angered that they managed to get Rayquaza, Zinnia challenges the two to a battle while wearing a second Mega Anklet. By teaming up with Aster's Noivern, Zinnia manages to lure Rayquaza away from Ruby and Sapphire. Upon getting away, Zinnia reveals to Rayquaza about her attempts to free it from the Pokémon Association's control and asks it to join her in destroying the meteoroid. Rayquaza rejects Zinnia's request, impales her with its tail, and blasts her away in a rage.

Zinnia later awakens in Sootopolis City, having been rescued by Latios. Mr. Stone attempts to apologize to Zinnia about the trouble he caused in attempting to control Rayquaza. Zinnia rejects Mr. Stone's apology and claims that he is only trying to save face for his failures. Now brought to tears, Zinnia gives up and claims that her villagers were right to believe she wasn't strong enough to save the planet in Aster's stead. This angers Emerald, who claims that they shouldn't give up and there must still be something they can do to save the planet.

When asked why only Draconids are allowed to ride with Rayquaza, Zinnia reveals that the plan to stop the meteoroid is essentially a suicide mission. Due to Rayquaza constantly emitting poisonous ozone when in space, the Lorekeeper would not survive the attack. After hearing Zinnia's explanation, Mr. Stone and Steven get the idea to find a way to protect the person riding on Rayquaza with a special suit. Later, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald have their various allies from around Hoenn travel to Sootopolis to assist in stopping the meteoroid. There, Steven presents Zinnia with a jar of Key Stones belonging to Aster collected from the Embedded Tower. When Zinnia speculates that Steven took some Key Stones for himself, Steven explains that he received his Key Stone from the Mega Evolution guru in Kalos. Although happy that she has the Key Stones needed to bond with Rayquaza, Zinnia collapses from her injuries. She is later seen in a bed and then placed in a wheelchair until she has fully healed. Ruby and Sapphire forgive her for her wrongdoings, with Sapphire promising that they can talk, get to know each other and become friends later.
