A Secret Base Trainer (Japanese: ひみつきちSecret Base) is a type of Pokémon Trainer introduced in Generation VI. They may have the appearance of any of a variety of Trainer classes depending upon the Trainer class chosen by the player they represent. When in the Secret Base of another player, all Secret Base Trainers except for the base owner will have the name Grunt (Japanese: したっぱUnderling).
The team of a Secret Base owner or a Secret Pal is made up of the first three Pokémon that were in the player's party when their base was saved (or fewer if the player does not have that many). Grunts' teams depend on the Trainer class they are represented as. The maximum level of a base owner's team is (Badges + 2) * 5, unless the player activates a Level Release decoration in the base (which the player cannot do until they own a Level Release themselves). The level of the Pokémon on a Grunt's team is the average of the levels of the Pokémon on the base owner's team minus 5, rounded down. The prize money rate for Secret Base Trainers is 20 per level of their last Pokémon.
Secret Base Trainers perform Single Battles by default, but the base owner may use a Proclamation decoration to change the battle format to Double, Triple, Rotation, or Inverse Battles. If a base owner or Secret Pal does not have the required number of Pokémon to properly perform the set battle format, they will perform a Single Battle instead.
Any Pokémon owned by Secret Base Trainers are fully recognized as seen by the Pokédex.
