Biology
Biology
Physiology
Chikorita is a small, pale-green, quadrupedal Pokémon with dark-green buds around its neck. Its head is large in proportion to the rest of its body, and it has big red eyes. Chikorita has four short legs with a single nailed toe on each and a stubby tail. On top of its head is a large, green leaf that is usually longer than its body.
Chikorita is a small Pokémon that is primarily pale green in color, with a darker green leaf and necklace of buds. It has a large head in proportion to the rest of its body, with large red eyes that appear to have no pupils. It has List of Pokémon by body style with a single nailed toe each, and a small tail. Its most distinguishing feature is the large leaf on the top of its head, which is usually longer than the rest of its body.

Gender differences
A soothing aroma wafts from the leaf, which can calm battling Pokémon. The leaf is also used to sense temperature and humidity. Chikorita actively seeks out and enjoys the sun's warmth. As mentioned in Sleep, Chikorita uses the leaf to search for the coziest place to sleep in. On occasion, Chikorita can be seen relaxing as it sleeps due to finding a great spot. Chikorita can be found in List of Pokémon by habitat. However, due to its status as a first partner Pokémon, a wild Chikorita is hard to come by and it is generally found under the ownership of Trainers. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy. Chikorita has a docile nature.
None.

Special abilities
Evolution
Chikorita can spawn Vine Whip from its neck and create Razor Leaf from the big leaf on its head. Like many Grass Pokémon, its foliage emits a Sweet Scent that has calming and Aromatherapy properties. This leaf also has the ability to check the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air.
Chikorita evolves into Bayleef, which evolves into Meganium.

Behavior
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Chikorita, like many Grass-type Pokémon, are very docile. It prefers to avoid fights by using the aromatherapeutic properties of the large leaf on its head. It spends most of its time sunbathing, although it is unclear if this is because it needs to photosynthesize, or if it is because Chikorita is coldblooded and needs to warm itself up. It appears to be sensitive to changes in its environment, and can use the leaf on its head to help purify the air around it, as well as to seek out warm places. Chikorita are also sensitive emotionally, and become very upset when misunderstood.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga
In Pokémon Adventures, Chikorita is the last of the three starter Pokémon to get a Trainer (in a similar fashion to Treecko never getting its rightful Trainer until Emerald steals him as a Sceptile, much later than the other two starters had). It escapes from Professor Elm and follows Crystal until she decides to accept it to her team, where it had to pass a test. Crystal's Chikorita wears a star pendant, formerly owned by Smoochum, who accepted Chikorita when its Trainer did. It later evolves into a Bayleef to protect Crys from a Larvitar, then into Meganium during a fight with Lugia along with the other two Johto starters (whose Trainers had been in a coma for weeks from their defeat against the Masked Man). Crys nicknamed it Megaree*/Mega*.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Chikorita returns to do the same as it did in Melee, unleashing Razor Leaf on release from a Poké Ball. It swings its leaf around violently until the green blades fly directly in front of it for a few seconds.

Trophy information
"A Leaf Pokémon. It loves sunbathing and can use the leaf on its head to check the temperature and humidity around it. Chikorita (Japanese: チコリータ Chicorita) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves into Bayleef starting at level 16, which evolves into Meganium starting at level 32.

Along with Cyndaquil and Totodile, Chikorita is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Johto available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

Biology

Chikorita is a small, pale-green, quadrupedal Pokémon with dark-green buds around its neck. Its head is large in proportion to the rest of its body, and it has big red eyes. Chikorita has four short legs with a single nailed toe on each and a stubby tail. On top of its head is a large, green leaf that is usually longer than its body.

A soothing aroma wafts from the leaf, which can calm battling Pokémon. The leaf is also used to sense temperature and humidity. Chikorita actively seeks out and enjoys the sun's warmth. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Chikorita uses the leaf to search for the coziest place to sleep in.[1] On occasion, Chikorita can be seen relaxing as it sleeps due to finding a great spot. Chikorita can be found in grasslands. However, due to its status as a first partner Pokémon, a wild Chikorita is hard to come by and it is generally found under the ownership of Trainers. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy. Chikorita has a docile nature.

Evolution

Chikorita evolves into Bayleef, which evolves into Meganium.

Trivia

Chikorita with its original yellow body
 • The Chikorita family is the only evolutionary line of a first partner Pokémon to keep their Japanese voices in the English dub of the anime, due to having nearly identical names in English and Japanese.
 • In the anime, Chikorita have had the most Trainers among the Johto first partner Pokémon. One Chikorita has been trained by each of Ash, Casey, Vincent, Silver, Lyra and Horace. However, Ash is the only one who is confirmed to not have received Chikorita as a first partner Pokémon.
 • Chikorita is the only first partner Pokémon that cannot be used in the Pokémon Jump minigame.
 • In both early artwork and the in-game sprites of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Chikorita's body is yellow. This was changed to light green in later artwork and the Pokémon Crystal sprites.
 • An early demo of Pokémon Gold and Silver in 1997 shows Chikorita's name as Happa (Japanese: ハッパ), which literally means leaf.
 • Due to a programming error, Chikorita is not required in order to receive the Diploma in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Origin

Chikorita appears to be based on sauropods. Its shape and appearance also alludes to that of a pear, or a Belgian endive, a type of chicory. Buds around Chikorita's neck look like a necklace adding feminine touch to the design.

Name origin

Chikorita and Chicorita may be a combination of chicory (a flowering plant) and -ita (the feminine form of the Spanish suffix for something small or young).
