Chikorita (Japanese: チコリータ Chicorita) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves into Bayleef starting at level 16, which evolves into Meganium starting at level 32.

Along with Cyndaquil and Totodile, Chikorita is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Johto available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. It is also one of the three first partner Pokémon of Lumiose City in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, alongside Tepig and Totodile.

Biology

Chikorita is a small, quadrupedal Pokémon. It has a pale green body, a large head in proportion to the rest of its body, a pair of large eyes with red irises, and a stubby tail. Each of its short legs end in a single white nail. There are dark green buds around its neck and a large, green leaf on top of its head.

Chikorita has a gentle personality and is docile by nature. The leaf on its head emits a pleasant, sweet aroma, which can soothe even battling Pokémon. Chikorita also uses it to sense the temperature and humidity of the area around itself, checking for a nice, warm place for it to sunbathe or, as mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, to sleep in. Chikorita can be found in grasslands, but it is rare to come by and is generally only found under the ownership of a Trainer due to its status as a first partner Pokémon. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy.

Evolution

Chikorita evolves into Bayleef, which evolves into Meganium.

• PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure: Chikorita is one of Pikachu's best friends. She is kidnapped by Treecko and Mankey and sent to Venusaur's lair, where she is later rescued. After Pikachu rescues her, she goes to the Meeting Place, where she builds the treehouse. She later accompanies Pikachu to the Sky Pavilion along with Piplup and Charmander, where she meets Mew.

Ash's Chikorita

Ash caught a female Chikorita in The Chikorita Rescue. She had such high affections for Ash that sometimes came to a few faults, such as refusing to be switched out for Pikachu. Chikorita later evolved into Bayleef in Current Events while protecting Ash from Team Rocket.

Casey's Chikorita

Casey's first partner Pokémon Chikorita debuted in The Double Trouble Header. It evolved into a Bayleef in The Bug Stops Here, and later evolved into a Meganium prior to the events of Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid.

Vincent's Chikorita

Chikorita is Vincent's first partner Pokémon that he received from Professor Elm. It evolved all the way to Meganium prior to The Legend of Thunder!.

Team Go-Getters

A Chikorita was a member of Team Go-Getters in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!.

In The Search for the Legend, Silver has a Chikorita behaves much in the same way to him as Pikachu does to Ash, including traveling on his shoulder instead of a Poké Ball.

In An Egg Scramble!, Lyra used a Chikorita in her battle against Dawn's Piplup, but it lost. In Bagged Then Tagged!, it and Khoury's Croconaw participated in a Tag Battle against Ash and Dawn, battling Cyndaquil and Monferno; both were defeated.

In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, a Chikorita assisted Pikachu and the Spiky-eared Pichu in the distant past.

In PK23 and Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade, a Chikorita befriended Pikachu and his friends.

Pocket Monsters HGSS Jō's Big Adventure

Tsubaki owns a Chikorita in Pocket Monsters HGSS Jō's Big Adventure. It had a battle with Jō's Totodile and lost. Chikorita evolved into a Bayleef and then into a Meganium when Tsubaki met up with Jō in Team Rocket's headquarters in Mahogany Town.

Pokémon Adventures

Chikorita debuted in Murkrow Row. Professor Elm owned a Chikorita in addition to a Totodile and a Cyndaquil. After its fellow first partner Pokémon already found Trainers of their own, Chikorita ran away from Elm's lab in order to meet Crystal. Although Crystal was initially reluctant to let the Chikorita join her team, she decided to accept it after seeing its courage and nicknamed it Megaree. It later evolved into a Bayleef during a battle with a wild Larvitar.

A Chikorita appeared in Out-Odding Oddish, under the ownership of a Pokéathlon participant.

Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys

Main article: Black's Chikorita

Black owned Bayleef as a Chikorita. It was his first partner Pokémon when he began his journey in Johto. However, he stole the Chikorita from Professor Elm's lab instead of having Elm give it to him. It evolved into a Bayleef prior to meeting up with Gold again. During an encounter with Lapras, Black released the Bayleef after it failed to defeat Lapras and Gold took Bayleef in.

• Chikorita is the only first partner Pokémon from Generation II to be preserved from the Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo, although its earlier name ハッパ Happa was changed.
• Due to a programming error, Chikorita is not required to receive the Diploma in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
• The Chikorita line is the only evolutionary line of a first partner Pokémon to keep their Japanese voices in the English-language dub of the animated series, due to having nearly identical names in English and Japanese.
• In the animated series, Chikorita have had the most Trainers among the Johto first partner Pokémon. One Chikorita has been trained by each of Ash, Casey, Vincent, Silver, Lyra, and Horace. However, Ash is the only one who is confirmed to not have received Chikorita as a first partner Pokémon.

Design variations

Chikorita's original yellow body

Early artwork and in-game sprites of Pokémon Gold and Silver depict Chikorita's body as yellow. This was changed to light green in later artwork and Pokémon Crystal.

Origin

Chikorita appears to be based on sauropods. Its shape and appearance also alludes to that of a pear, or a Belgian endive, a type of chicory. Buds around Chikorita's neck look like a necklace adding feminine touch to the design.

Name origin

Chikorita and Chicorita may be a combination of chicory (a flowering plant) and -ita (the feminine form of the Spanish suffix for something small or young).

Happa is the Japanese word 葉っぱ happa, meaning "leaf".
