Plot
Three years have passed since Clefairy supposedly sacrificed his life to prevent the destruction of Pallet Town. Red and his family moved to New Bark Town after his father was transferred. Red is fishing in a river when his mother announces that breakfast is ready. Red, who is depressed, says he's not hungry and expresses that the move was a good idea, as it helps him forget about Clefairy's death.
Meanwhile, Pikachu goes around town looking for Red after they were separated. A woman in a kimono says he's fishing on a riverbank. Pikachu finally finds him and runs to greet him. Red, who previously in the chapter only had his back visible, turns to look at Pikachu and reveals he's gained a lot of weight. The two look at the sky, and Red wonders if Clefairy is also eating a lot in heaven; his image appears amidst the clouds.
A biker gang appears, and their leader is Clefairy in the flesh, carrying a bag. Red and Pikachu chase after him demanding explanations. Red finally catches him, and Clefairy explains how he survived the missile explosion: when he rode Professor Oak's missile, he had ulterior motives, wanting to be venerated as the hero of Pallet Town; along the way, he finally realized that if the two missiles made contact, he would die in the process. Clefairy then jumped at the last minute and crashed to the ground, remaining unconscious for a week. In a semi-conscious state, he tried to return to Red's house intending to eat his mother's feast, but it was too late; Red had already moved to New Bark. Clefairy then vented his anger by joining a biker gang.
Red and Pikachu are furious with Clefairy for not letting them know he was alive. Pikachu says he's had sleepless nights worrying about him, Clefairy responds by sarcastically asking if he had lost his sleep after eating Red's mother's feast. Red then beats Clefairy and tells him to put it in his gut that he still cares and took raised him with all his heart. Clefairy takes it literally and punches his abdomen.
The bag Clefairy was carrying starts to move and Clefairy desperately tries to hide what's inside. Clefairy tries to escape and Red tries pulling the bag from him, the bag tears and a Marill comes out. Clefairy explains that he caught it in a nearby forest and intends to sell it for a large amount of money, as this is a new species of Pokémon. His plan is to capture all the new species of Pokémon in Johto, sell them, and get rich. Red disagrees and runs off with Marill for it to be studied at Professor Oak's Laboratory.
In the laboratory, Professor Oak is surprised to see Clefairy and states that he already knows the Pokémon they brought, revealing it to be called Marill. Oak says it's time to tell Red something, and the trio follows the professor to a special room. Inside are Gold, Silver, and Professor Elm. Professor Oak introduces them and says they are trainers he has prepared to embark on a journey and complete the Pokédex. Red then questions him about having already completed the Pokédex 3 years ago. Oak explains that new adventures await in Johto and that they have officially entered the "Gold & Silver Saga." Professor Oak gives Red the newest model of Pokédex and a Pokégear with a built-in radio and telephone. Professor Oak also explains that he no longer considers Red's Pokédex complete, and that the trainers in Johto are much more powerful. Pikachu gets ready for the journey, unlike Clefairy who isn't at all enthusiastic.
Red realizes he needs to get a new First Partner Pokémon. Gold chooses Cyndaquil and Silver chooses Totodile. Clefairy says that these Johto Pokémon are nothing compared to him, and in response Totodile bites him violently. Red asks if there isn't a new Pokémon for him, and Professor Elm hands him an egg. Clefairy almost cooks it, but Elm stops him and explains that it's a Pokémon egg. Red gets excited, Professor Oak shows them the direction of their new journey, and Red, Gold, and Silver now consider themselves rivals.
