Arboliva (Japanese: オリーヴァ Oliva) is a dual-type Grass/Normal Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

It evolves from Dolliv starting at level 35. It is the final form of Smoliv.

Biology

Arboliva launching oil

Arboliva is a Pokémon resembling a small olive tree. Its body is white on top, and brown and woody at the bottom. Its head is oval and contains thin, slanted, purple eyes that appear closed. The top of Arboliva's head and its neck are covered with leaves, and two large leavy branches protrude from either side of its upper body. These branches can be bent above Arboliva's head to resemble a wreath. There are three purplish olive fruits on each of these branches, for a total of six fruits. Arboliva's lower body flares out into multiple root-like portions, hiding what appears to be its thin legs at the center.

Arboliva has a calm and compassionate nature, kind enough to share its nutrient-rich, aromatic oil with weakened Pokémon. However, when threatened, it will drive back enemies by launching its oil at them, with a force powerful enough to destroy a boulder.

Arboliva and its pre-evolved forms are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Terrain Pulse by leveling up. Arboliva is also the only known Pokémon that can have Seed Sower as an Ability.

Arboliva evolves from Dolliv and is the final form of Smoliv.

Major appearances

Lucius's Arboliva

A giant Arboliva debuted at the end of Nemona and Brassius and…, reappearing in Arboliva's Forest as the guardian of Arboliva's Forest. In the next episode, after the Rising Volt Tacklers has helped to heal the damage done to the forest by a wildfire, Arboliva returned to its Ancient Poké Ball and allowed itself to be taken under Liko's care. In the same episode, it's revealed that it was one of Lucius's Pokémon and one of the Six Heroes. Unlike other depictions of its species, Arboliva's leaves were thicker and more numerous on its head; and its olives were smaller.

• Arboliva and its pre-Evolutions are the only Normal-type Pokémon in the Grass Egg Group.

Origin

Arboliva may be based on an olive tree, likely referencing how Spain (the region Paldea is based on) is the biggest producer of olives in the world. Arboliva sometimes makes a pose resembling the olive wreath in battle. Its calm temperament may be inspired by the symbolism of the olive branch, which traditionally represents peace.

Arboliva may also be inspired by dryads, given its humanoid appearance and compassionate nature. Specifically, it may be based on the Hamadryad, dryads which lived in trees and were sometimes considered a part of the tree itself.

Name origin

Arboliva may be a combination of arbor or árbol (Spanish for tree), olive or oliva (olive in various Romance languages), and diva.

Oliva may be derived from oliva or a combination of olive and diva.
