Chimchar (Japanese: ヒコザル Hikozaru) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves into Monferno starting at level 14, which evolves into Infernape starting at level 36.

Along with Turtwig and Piplup, Chimchar is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Sinnoh available at the beginning of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl.

Biology

A sleeping Chimchar — note the lack of a flame

Chimchar is a bipedal Pokémon resembling a chimpanzee. Its fur is primarily a shade of orange, although its face, outer ears, underbelly, hands, and feet are light yellow. Its ears are large in comparison to its head, and has red insides. It also has red markings around its eyes, as well as two pointed teeth in its upper jaw, a swirl-like symbol on its chest, and five fingers on its hands with three toes on its feet. It has a swirly crest of hair on its head. Its rear has a small, round, red patch that is usually obscured by flames produced by burning gas in its stomach. These flames cannot be put out by rain, although they go out when Chimchar goes to sleep, and burn weakly when it feels ill. In the past, this flame on its rear has caused people to mistake it for an apparition, dubbed the "Lantern-Tail". Chimchar is very agile, being able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains where it lives. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy.

Evolution

Chimchar evolves into Monferno, which evolves into Infernape.

A Chimchar Egg (right) in the anime

Chimchar debuted in Following A Maiden's Voyage!, where it was teasing a Piplup after stealing food from it. Piplup then started firing a Bubble Beam attack, but Chimchar kept jumping out of the way. Staraptor was hit in Piplup's line of fire and created a Whirlwind that wrecked everything in Professor Rowan's lab. Chimchar jumped out of a broken window, with Piplup chasing after it.

In The Rise of Darkrai, Alice uses a Chimchar to power her hot air balloon with Flamethrower. It reappeared in the ending credits of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

In DPS01, Professor Rowan presented a Chimchar to Shinko as one of the first partner Pokémon for her to pick. A situation similar to Following A Maiden's Voyage! occurred, with Chimchar and Piplup starting a fight, leading to a window breaking and Chimchar and Piplup escaping. They were then captured by an Ariados's web before being rescued by Shinko and Dawn.

In Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad, a Chimchar was living in a forest.

In Showdown at the Gates of Warp!, Alternate World Ash's Infernape devolved into Monferno, then Chimchar, and finally an Egg due to Dialga and Palkia's influence. It was later restored to normal.

"A Chimp Pokémon. With a flaming tail, Chimchar is skilled in Fire-type moves. Its light body affords it the ability to scale steep cliffs and live atop rocky mountains. Some say that the fiery tail is fueled by gas made in its stomach. Not even rain can put out the flames, but Chimchar always puts out the fire when asleep. Chimchar evolves into Monferno."

Trivia

  • Chimchar shares its category with Grookey. They are both known as the Chimp Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, if the player chooses Chimchar, the wild Starly can defeat it when Chimchar is at 4 HP, bypassing the red HP bar state (which would otherwise cause the Starly to flee). This causes the game to freeze. This has a combined 1.56% probability.
    • This cannot happen with Turtwig or Piplup, as Chimchar's base HP is the lowest of the three.
  • Chimchar and its evolutions were designed by Takao Unno.[1]

Origin

Chimchar appears to be based on a young chimpanzee. However, the markings on its rear without the flame seem to indicate that it is more a cross between a chimpanzee and a young baboon.

Name origin

Chimchar may be a combination of chimp and char (to burn).

Hikozaru may be a combination of 火 hi (fire), 小 ko (small), 子 ko (child), and 猿 saru (monkey, ape).
