Magmortar (Japanese: ブーバーン Booburn) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Magmar when traded while holding a Magmarizer. It is the final form of Magby.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)

Biology

Magmortar's cannons

Magmortar is a large, vaguely humanoid, red-and-yellow-striped Pokémon with an egg-shaped body. It has pink lips on its dark face. It has yellow, tubular arms with a black "band" on both and three small claws on the black part of each "hand". Its legs are small in proportion to its body with pink thighs, red feet, and black shackles around its ankles. It has one large yellow flame on its head, as well as large red flames on its shoulders and tail. Additionally, it has four pink spikes on its back. It has an organ that resembles a magma chamber.

When Magmortar prepares to shoot fire from its hands, its claws are capable of disappearing into its skin, forming a pressurized cannon. It blasts fireballs of over 3,600 °F (2,000 °C), easily melting through iron and burning foes to a blackened crisp, although Magmortar avoids this method when hunting prey. Magmortar increases its body temperature by inhaling deeply, increasing the fire burning with its belly. When firing, its body can turn into a whitish hue from the intense heat. Its arm starts melting when it fires a whole barrage. Magmortar is used in some factories in order to process metal. It lives in volcanic craters, with a single pair of male and female Magmortar occupying one.

Evolution

Magmortar evolves from Magmar and is the final form of Magby.

Evolution data

Magmortar evolves from Magmar when traded while holding a Magmarizer. Magmar cannot evolve into Magmortar in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as Magmortar is not present in those games. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Magmortar evolves from Magmar when exposed to a Magmarizer.

Trivia

  • Magmortar's evolutionary family may be considered a counterpart of Electivire's. Both evolve starting at Level 30 and whose evolved forms evolve via trading with an item containing the suffix "-izer" . Both have the same gender ratio (75% male, 25% female), and both are typically exclusive to one version of a pair of games. They both have similar status-inducing Abilities in Flame Body and Static, as well as the same Hidden Ability, Vital Spirit. Their evolutionary relatives were also released in the same generation (Generation I and II).
  • Magmortar, along with Electivire, Gliscor, and Tangrowth, are the only Generation IV Pokémon that explicitly required the use of a Generation III game in order to be available until the release of Pokémon Platinum. In this case, both the Magmarizer and Magby are only available through dual-slot mode with Pokémon LeafGreen.
  • Magmortar was designed by Hironobu Yoshida.[1]
  • In Japan, a Magmortar card was censored, due to the Magmortar on the card to appear to be pointing its cannon to the viewer.

Origin

Magmortar seems to be a buffed-up version of its pre-evolved form's inspiration, the Karura. It also has features of a duck or booby with a mythical salamander. The spikes on its back resemble those of an iguana. Its arms can transform into cannons.

Name origin

Magmortar may be a combination of magma and mortar (an artillery weapon).

Booburn may be a combination of booby and burn.
