In the games
Erika (Japanese: エリカ Erika) is the Gym Leader of Celadon City's Gym, known officially as the Celadon Gym. She hands out the Rainbow to Trainers who defeat her in battle. She is a serene young woman who specializes in Grass Pokémon. She is always dressed in an elegant Furisode, and seems to represent traditional Japanese beauty.
Erika's title is The Nature-Loving Princess.

Erika is ladylike, and a teacher of flower-arranging. She is a quiet girl, but she's well-known in Celadon City. Erika only collects Pokémon if she considers them attractive, though her definition of attractive seems to include varieties only a botanist could love. She also tends to doze off quite a bit, implying she may be narcoleptic (or simply being affected by the powders given off by the grass Pokémon), but will become inspired after a good match.

In addition to the Rainbow Badge, Erika gives out 21, in Red and Blue, Red and Green, and Yellow. In Gold, their remakes , as well as , she gives out 19.

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the reward TM once again contains Mega Drain, but this time is TM53.

She is able to be rebattled in HeartGold and SoulSilver, after talking to her on Saturday or Sunday between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. She is found by Celadon City's fountain. If she is called on Sunday morning, she will happily give a rematch at the Fighting Dojo.

Erika also appears in B2W2, taking part in the Pokémon World Tournament. She can be faced in the Kanto Leaders, Type Expert, and World Leaders Tournaments.

Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow
Erika returns in Stadium 2 as part of the Kanto Gym Leader Castle. Her strategy largely revolves around using sleep-inducing moves, including Rest for some of her own Pokémon.

Erika appeared in Pokémon Scent-sation!, running a perfumery in Celadon City where she sold a special brand of perfume made from the essence of her favorite Pokémon, Gloom. Misty, Brock, and Pikachu were enamored with the scents, but Ash insulted the perfume. In protest, the manager, who was later revealed to be the Gym Leader Erika, had him banned from her store and by extension the greenhouse/Celadon Gym.

Jessie and James were sneaking into the Gym trying to steal the perfume scents to sell them, but they were stamped with a red X and banned from the Gym, too. Ash found them and untied them in exchange for help entering the Gym.

Round 2
Disguised as a girl named Ashley, Ash signed up as a student at the Gym. Erika was reading a fairy tale to some Grass-type Pokémon when he found and recognized her. Pikachu instantly recognized Ash and exposed him. Erika finally agreed to a battle for the Gym Badge. She turned out to be very confident in her abilities, but became too confident when Ash used his Charmander—as Fire was Grass Pokémon's greatest weakness—when she tried to use her Weepinbell. However, their match was interrupted when TRT started a fire in the Gym as revenge for being thrown out.
{{Party/Single

|color=grass color
Ash risked his life to run in and rescue Erika's beloved Gloom, who had once saved her from a wild Grimer when she was a little girl. Out of gratitude, Erika awarded Ash with the Rainbow Badge.
|headcolor=grass color light

|bordercolor=grass color dark
She also reappeared in flashbacks in Pikachu's Goodbye and Gotta Catch Ya Later!.

|desc=Erika has another Weepinbell which can be seen when Ash (disguised as Ashley) walks into the greenhouse part of the Gym. It is sitting next to Erika's other Gloom, and watching a caretaker wipe the drool from the Gloom's mouth. It is then later seen being recalled into its Poké Ball by a Gym caretaker when Team Rocket's bomb causes the Gym to go up in flames.

Erika’s love for Grass Pokémon all began when she was young with her Gloom. While wandering the streets of Celadon City, Erika was ambushed by a wild Grimer, but Gloom intervened and rescued its future Trainer from being attacked.

Original series
Erika appeared in Pokémon Scent-sation!, where she runs a perfumery in Celadon City, which sells scents from essences extracted from her garden plants and her Pokémon. It also sells a special brand of perfume made from the essence of her favorite Pokémon, Gloom. Misty, Brock, and Pikachu were enamored with the scents, but Ash insulted the perfume. In protest, Erika had him banned from her store and by extension the greenhouse, which also served as the location of the Celadon Gym.

Later, Jessie and James were caught trying to steal perfume and were also banned from the Gym. Ash found them and untied them in exchange for help entering the Gym. Disguised as a girl named Cross-dressing, with TRT disguised as Ashley's parents, Ash signed up as a student at the Gym. While Erika was reading a fairytale to some Grass Pokémon, Pikachu noticed the eerily familiar Ashley and exposed Ash's disguise. Even so, Erika agreed to his request for a battle.

Erika sent out her Tangela against Ash's Bulbasaur. Ash quickly recalled Bulbasaur after it was Paralysis by a close-range Stun Spore. Charmander then defeated Erika's Weepinbell before being overwhelmed by Gloom's scent. However, before the match could continue, it was interrupted when Team Rocket started a fire in the Gym as revenge for being thrown out. While Misty, Brock, and Erika's Picnicker worked together to douse the fire, Ash ran into the Gym and successfully rescued Gloom. Out of gratitude, Erika awarded the Rainbow to Ash.

She reappeared in flashbacks in the Japanese versions of Pikachu's Goodbye and Gotta Catch Ya Later!.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series
Erika's silhouette appeared in Destination: Coronation! alongside the other Kanto Gym Leaders as the narrator explained how the Gym Leader system works in the Pokémon world.

Erika reappeared in Suffering the Flings and Arrows!, where she was reunited with Ash. The Celadon Gym had been rebuilt since and Erika again thanked Ash for all his help. She hosted a Pokémon Flower Arrangement class which Ash attended alongside Goh and Chloe. Erika’s class helped Goh's Pinsir and Chloe's Eevee improve their confidence.

In Heroes Unite!, Erika and Leafeon reappeared in a fantasy, alongside other trainers Chloe and her Eevee met.

Character
Erika has is kind hearted and readily accepts students to teach them about being a good Trainer and perfume manufacturing. However, she also possesses a temperamental side, particularly when her perfume is insulted.

None of Weepinbell's moves are known.}}
She is confident and gracefully composed in battle. Her key strategy to bring out the best in her Pokémon is empathy She uses status moves like Stun Spore to overwhelm her opponent's Pokémon. This strategy also helped her overcome Ash's Charmander, a Fire with a type advantage against Grass Pokémon.

In the How I Became a Pokémon Card, Erika appears in Erika and Kaede... and Dark Gloom. She is a childhood friend of Kaede, a Team Rocket operative with allergies to flowers. Kaede had an unfortunate reaction to a flower wreath Erika gave her at a party and ran off in shame. They met again later when Kaede invaded Erika's Gym on behalf of Team Rocket. Erika was overjoyed to see her old friend and seemed to disregard any and all ill plots.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Erika is an elegant young princess who gives lectures at universities and practices archery. She is allied with the "good" Gym Leaders of Kanto, and often assists Misty and Brock during crises.
|epname=Pokémon Scent-sation!

|desc=Erika has an Oddish that was seen at the Celadon Gym. It was first seen when Erika is telling a story to her students, and one of the Gym caretakers is seen helping the other Grass Pokémon exercise. It was later seen cowering in terror under a leaf after the Gym caught fire, and is soon recalled into its Poké Ball by a caretaker.
She debuted in Blame It on Eevee, where she sent Red out on a quest to capture an unusual Eevee that could change at will between its three elemental forms, due to being "modified" in a Team Rocket experiment. Erika threatened to kill Eevee by removing it from the healing machine Red had put it in; however, it turned out that she was just testing Red's character, and she then revealed her true alliance and saved the Eevee.

Erika then starts teaching at the Celadon University, replacing a dangerous professor. In Whacked by Marowak!, she goes to meet Yellow after hearing about her from Misty, only to hear from one of her teammates that a Red look-alike has been spotted right outside of Celadon City. Pika races to him only to find out it was a disguise and the real Trainer, Miles, was hired by the Elite Four, who then beats her to the ground, threatens to take her life, and uses his Marowak's Bonemerang laced with some of his Paras's Spores to disable Erika while Yellow chases him. She then figures out that to disguise himself as Red, he would've needed to encounter Red's scent in real life and has Blaine call over for assistance.
She is next seen defending Celadon from Lorelei and her Shellder and Cloyster. She then realized that the Good Gym Leaders of Kanto were simply being stalled so Lance could carry out his real plan, and hoped that Yellow and Blaine had found out the same. She also realized that they were being targeted so the Elite Four could get their hands on the Gym Leader's Badges, which one of the Shellder finally retrieved from her and Misty.

Erika is the supervisor of the Kanto Gym Leaders, meaning that she was automatically pitted against Pryce, the Leader of the Johto Gym Leaders, in the exhibition tournament held at the Indigo Plateau  in the Gold, Silver & Crystal. She lost that match and was later lured into the Magnet Train along with the other Gym Leaders to fight masked Team Rocket Grunts. She witnessed Misty's sudden burst of strength and gave her a flower brooch. Erika was on the front half of the train which later was about to crash into a dead end, but Red appeared out of nowhere to stop the train. Erika then lent Red her Pokégear.

In the TCG
In the Trading Card Game, the card Gym Heroes allows each player to draw up to three cards. Another card, Gym Challenge, demonstrates her kindness, depicting her as helping a Growlithe out of the rain. Gym Heroes enables the player to trade two cards in a hand for two Pokémon in the deck, both with Erika in their names. Gym Heroes is attached to the player's Active Pokémon, and if that Pokémon is not knocked out, the card returns to the owner's hand; it allows the player to reduce the damage their attacks inflict on the Defending Pokémon. Gym Heroes allows the player to peek at the hand of the opponent and force them to summon any number of basic Pokémon from the hand to the Bench.

As in the anime, she also appears to make fragrances, such as LeAF, depicted on Erika's perfume.

Erika has an Erika Theme Deck in the Gym Heroes expansion. Its Tamamushi City Gym is based on the Celadon Gym.

In the TFG
Unnamed Third Set was slated to be released as a Trainer figure in the Unnamed Third Set of the Pokémon Trading Figure Game.

Trivia
* Erika's Japanese Leader title is 自然を愛するお嬢様.
* Erika's Yellow sprite was altered from the original games. The only other significant opponents to be changed were Blue, Brock, and Misty, based on their prominent anime counterparts.
** The change was made to correct an error with her kimono. In the original sprite, it is crossed right over left, a style reserved for the deceased at funerals; the updated sprite has it properly crossed left over right.
* In every battle against Erika, at least one of her Pokémon knows a sleep-inducing move.
* Erika, along with Janine, are the only Kanto Gym Leaders to give the player a TM upon their defeat in .
* There were 1,153 episodes between Erika's first appearance and second appearance in the anime, which is the longest time between a particular human character's first and second physical appearances within the main series.
* Erika's Generation III sprite is the only one of her sprites that does not have a Poké Ball in it.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Erika's Victreebel and Bellossom don't level up in her rematch team, both remaining at Level 56.
* In Yellow, Erika's Gloom knows Petal Dance at level 32, but level 33 is the earliest that Gloom can learn that move in that generation.
* In Erika's HeartGold and SoulSilver artwork, the heart-shaped crest from the HeartGold logo can be seen in her hairband and obi.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Erika's hairband and obi are red in her official artwork, battle sprite, and VS sprite. However, in her overworld sprite, they are magenta instead.
* Erika is the only Kanto Gym Leader to have the same Japanese and English name, as the name Erika is common in both Japan and the western world.
** Also, Erika's Badge, the Rainbow Badge, is the only Kanto Badge to have the same Japanese and English name.

Erika (Japanese: エリカ Erika) is the Gym Leader of Celadon City's Gym, known officially as the Celadon Gym. She hands out the Rainbow Badge to Trainers who defeat her in battle. She is a serene young woman who specializes in Grass-type Pokémon. She is always dressed in an elegant kimono, and seems to represent traditional Japanese beauty.

In the core series games

Erika's title is The Nature-Loving Princess. She is ladylike, and a teacher of flower-arranging. She is a quiet girl, but she's well-known in Celadon City. Erika only collects Pokémon if she considers them attractive, though her definition of attractive seems to include varieties only a botanist could love. She also tends to doze off quite a bit, but will become inspired after a good match.

In addition to the Rainbow Badge, Erika gives out TM21 (Mega Drain), in Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, their remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver, as well as FireRed and LeafGreen, she gives out TM19 (Giga Drain). In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the reward TM once again contains Mega Drain, but this time is TM53.

She can be battled again in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, after talking to her on Saturday or Sunday between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. She is found by Celadon City's fountain. If she is called on Sunday morning, she will happily give a rematch at the Fighting Dojo.

Erika also appears in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, taking part in the Pokémon World Tournament. She can be faced in the Kanto Leaders, Type Expert, and World Leaders Tournaments.

Pre series

A young Erika

Erika’s love for Grass-type Pokémon all began when she was young with her Gloom.

Disguised as a girl named Ashley, with Team Rocket disguised as Ashley's parents, Ash signed up as a student at the Gym. While Erika was reading a fairytale to some Grass Pokémon, Pikachu noticed the eerily familiar Ashley and exposed Ash's disguise. Even so, Erika agreed to his request for a battle.

Erika sent out her Tangela against Ash's Bulbasaur. Ash quickly recalled Bulbasaur after it was paralyzed by a close-range Stun Spore. Charmander then defeated Erika's Weepinbell before being overwhelmed by Gloom's scent. However, before the match could continue, it was interrupted when Team Rocket started a fire in the Gym as revenge for being thrown out. While Misty, Brock, and Erika's Gym assistants worked together to douse the fire, Ash ran into the Gym and successfully rescued Gloom. Out of gratitude, Erika awarded the Rainbow Badge to Ash.

She is confident and gracefully composed in battle. Her key strategy to bring out the best in her Pokémon is empathy She uses status moves like Stun Spore to overwhelm her opponent's Pokémon. This strategy also helped her overcome Ash's Charmander, a Fire-type with a type advantage against Grass-type Pokémon.

Pokémon Adventures

Erika and Blaine

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Erika is an elegant young princess who gives lectures at universities and practices archery. She is allied with the "good" Gym Leaders of Kanto, and often assists Misty and Brock during crises.

History

Red, Green & Blue arc

She debuted in Blame It on Eevee, where she sent Red out on a quest to capture an unusual Eevee that could change at will between its three evolved forms, due to being "modified" in a Team Rocket experiment. Erika threatened to kill Eevee by removing it from the healing machine Red had put it in; however, it turned out that she was just testing Red's character, and she then revealed her true alliance and saved the Eevee.

Yellow arc

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Erika is the supervisor of the Kanto Gym Leaders, meaning that she was automatically pitted against Pryce, the Leader of the Johto Gym Leaders, in the exhibition tournament held at the Indigo Plateau.

In the TCG

In the Trading Card Game, the card Erika allows each player to draw up to three cards. Another card, Erika's Kindness, demonstrates her kindness, depicting her as helping a Growlithe out of the rain. Erika's Maids enables the player to trade two cards in a hand for two Pokémon in the deck, both with Erika in their names. Charity is attached to the player's Active Pokémon, and if that Pokémon is not knocked out, the card returns to the owner's hand; it allows the player to reduce the damage their attacks inflict on the Defending Pokémon. Erika's Perfume allows the player to peek at the hand of the opponent and force them to summon any number of basic Pokémon from the hand to the Bench.

As in the anime, she also appears to make fragrances, such as LeAF, depicted on Erika's perfume.

Erika has an eponymous Theme Deck in the Gym Heroes expansion. Its Japanese counterpart is based on the Celadon Gym.

Erika was slated to be released as a Trainer figure in the Unnamed Third Set of the Pokémon Trading Figure Game.

Trivia

  • Erika's Japanese Leader title is 自然を愛するお嬢様.
  • Erika's Pokémon Yellow sprite was altered from the original games. The only other significant opponents to be changed were Blue, Brock, and Misty, based on their prominent anime counterparts.
    • The change was made to correct an error with her kimono. In the original sprite, it is crossed right over left, a style reserved for the deceased at funerals; the updated sprite has it properly crossed left over right.
  • In every battle against Erika, at least one of her Pokémon knows a sleep-inducing move.
  • Erika, along with Janine, are the only Kanto Gym Leaders to give the player a TM upon their defeat in Gold, Silver, and Crystal.
  • There were 1,153 episodes between Erika's first appearance and second appearance in the anime, which is the longest time between a particular human character's first and second physical appearances within the main series.
  • Erika's Generation III sprite is the only one of her sprites that does not have a Poké Ball in it.
  • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Erika's Victreebel and Bellossom don't level up in her rematch team, both remaining at Level 56.
  • In Pokémon Yellow, Erika's Gloom knows Petal Dance at level 32, but level 33 is the earliest that Gloom can learn that move in that generation.
  • In Erika's HeartGold and SoulSilver artwork, the heart-shaped crest from the HeartGold logo can be seen in her hairband and obi.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Erika's hairband and obi are red in her official artwork, battle sprite, and VS sprite. However, in her overworld sprite, they are magenta instead.
  • Erika is the only Kanto Gym Leader to have the same Japanese and English name, as the name Erika is common in both Japan and the western world.
    • Also, Erika's Badge, the Rainbow Badge, is the only Kanto Badge to have the same Japanese and English name.
