Bruno (Japanese: シバ Siba) is a Fighting-type Trainer and member of the Indigo Elite Four.

Character profile

Bruno is the second member of the Kanto Elite Four. He raises Fighting-type Pokémon, living with them and training with them. He joined the Elite Four out of a desire to challenge the best Trainers. Although he trains Fighting Pokémon, he also commonly uses Onix and its evolved form. His strongest Pokémon is always his signature Pokémon Machamp.

Bruno regularly visits the Sevii Islands. He and his Pokémon use the Ember Spa on One Island, and he visits Two Island to buy RageCandyBars. Bruno once used to train with Brawly, a Fighting-type Gym Leader from Hoenn, in Sevault Canyon.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, Bruno continues to be a member of the Elite Four, having moved up in position by one level. Like the rest of the Elite Four, Bruno uses a Pokémon not native to Kanto; in Bruno's case, he now uses a Hitmontop.

Appearance

Bruno is a large muscular man with a black long spiky hair tied into a ponytail. He has black eyes and think eyebrows. He is always seen shirtless and barefoot. Bruno wears a white long pants, a black karate belt, and black bracelets around his wrists and ankles.

Bruno appeared in To Master the Onixpected!. While Ash was preparing for the Indigo Plateau Conference, he found out that Bruno was training at Mt. Hideaway near Pallet Town. Brock was enthusiastic about the prospect of meeting Bruno, believing that he possessed some kind of secret technique that was the key to his success, so Ash, Brock, and Misty headed out to meet him. Along the way, they learned that Mt. Hideaway was the home of a larger-than-usual Onix.

After Bruno saved the group from the giant Onix, Ash and Brock begged him to take them on as students. Bruno agreed, under the condition that Ash and Brock would do anything he said. Bruno then had them chop wood, carry water, and carve chopsticks, among other chores. During this "training", Misty began to suspect that Bruno was a phony.

Not wanting to believe that Bruno didn't have any kind of special talent, Brock decided to prove Bruno's power by surprising him with a sneak attack. He assumed that Bruno's reflexes would be so amazing, he would stop Brock with ease. However, this did not happen, and Brock nearly ended up knocking Bruno unconscious. Bruno admitted that he didn't know any secret techniques on how to train Pokémon and just wanted to have someone to do a myriad of chores for him, thus shattering Brock's image of him.

Later, the group was again chased by the giant Onix. With his athletic skills, Bruno was able to save Ash from being hit by it, and then tricked the Onix into knocking itself on the head with its own tail. Once Onix was calmed down, Bruno was able to examine it, and discovered that the reason for Onix's aggressive behavior had been a Sandslash stuck in-between its boulders. After Bruno removed the Sandslash, Onix became so grateful that it willingly let itself be caught by him. Bruno then told the group that the only true secret behind Pokémon training is that Trainers and their Pokémon should care for each other.

Character

Bruno is regarded by his many fans as a stoic individual dedicated to hard work. Though Ash and his friends came to learn that this image was in fact false, Bruno does possess superhuman physical strength and agility. The group also witnessed the Elite Four member's true strength, ambition, and set determination. He takes time to meditate in order to hone his skills, which adds clarity and wisdom to his character. Bruno admitted his strategy for success is simply catch strong Pokémon. He went on to explain that the true secret behind Pokémon training is that Trainers and their Pokémon should care for each other.

It went rampaging around the mountain area until Bruno discovered that it was in pain due to a Sandslash having gotten stuck inside of it. After the Sandslash was removed, Bruno asked Onix to come along with him, and it accepted the offer, allowing Bruno to easily catch it.

Bruno in Pokémon Generations

Bruno appeared in The Challenger. He was first seen talking about Blue, the first Trainer in a long time to collect eight Gym Badges, with the rest of the Kanto Elite Four. Later, he was the second member of the Elite Four to be challenged by Blue. Eventually, he and his Machamp were beaten by the young Trainer with relative ease, much to his shock, and Blue was allowed to move on to Agatha's room.

History

Past

As in the Generation III games, Bruno used to train with Brawly, the Gym Leader of Hoenn's Dewford Town.

Red, Green & Blue arc

Bruno, along with the rest of the original Kanto Elite Four, first appeared at A Charizard...and a Champion, observing Red and Blue's battle at Indigo Plateau.

Yellow arc

He was properly introduced two years later in this chapter, where he was revealed to have sent a challenge letter to Red to come meet and battle him at Mt. Moon. The two Trainers met and started battling, with Red delightfully commenting on how this was the first exciting battle he had had in three years. However, in the middle of the battle, the rest of the Elite Four appeared, telling Red about their plan to wipe out humans from the face of the planet and create a utopia for Pokémon. Red refused the offer to join them, but was then attacked by the four together, with Agatha using the mind-controlling powers of her Ghost-type Pokémon to force Bruno attack Red as well. Red was eventually frozen in ice by Lorelei, with only his Pikachu managing to escape from the site.

Bruno with the Johto Elite Four

Later, at the Elite Four's base on Cerise Island, Bill and Lt. Surge encountered Bruno near an acidic river, with two wild Onix acting as bridges. The battle took place with Bruno standing on one Onix, and his opponents standing on the other. When Yellow and Blaine showed up, it was also revealed that Bruno had put up a soundproof barrier at the cave entrance to stop any intruders from entering and interrupting the battle. Bill and Lt. Surge eventually gained the upper hand by combining Exeggcute's Egg Bomb and Barrage with Electrode's Self-Destruct, causing Bruno to fall off the Onix, while Lt. Surge had his Magneton create a force field for himself and Bill to float in. Bruno was saved by his Hitmonlee's stretching limbs, and then briefly once again placed under Agatha's mind control, attempting to make Lt. Surge and Bill fall into the acid below. However, they were saved by the arrival of Red, whose precense snapped Bruno out of his mind control, and they chose to continue their previously interrupted battle. Using his Eevee's power to change between its evolutions, Red was eventually able to defeat Bruno. Despite his loss, Bruno was still satisfied, and chose to leave.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

It was revealed that Bruno had encountered Koga while leaving Cerise Island, and the two had chosen to train together. They first appeared underground while Red and Blue were digging a tunnel to Ilex Forest. Later, after the Masked Man's defeat, Bruno and Koga encountered two of the Masked Man's minions, Will and Karen, who agreed to come with them. Over the coming years, they would become known as the new Kanto Elite Four.

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

Bruno and the three other Elite Four members met Gold at the Pokéathlon Dome and competed in a set of Pokéathlon events against him. Bruno competed against Gold in Block Smash, using only his Machamp while Gold used his entire team. Although Bruno eventually had the lead, Gold managed to pick up his pace and eventually win the event. When Gold at one point mentioned Lance, Bruno referred to Lance as an old friend of his. Gold also gave Bruno some treats before leaving, and Bruno immediately fell in love with the taste of Rage Candy Bars. At the end of the chapter, Whitney was seen sending a Bruno a boxful of Rage Candy Bars, much to his delight.

Character

Bruno attaches his Poké Balls to the ends of a nunchuck. The force of him using the weapon causes his Pokémon to be released at high speeds, giving him the advantage in battles. He also has a unique Hitmonlee with arms as flexible as its legs, something previously thought to be impossible.

		Hitmonlee is Bruno's main Pokémon that specializes in kicking. He was known to have very strong legs as he was able to destroy Bill's house in one single kick and in other violent activities. He was used in a battle against Red on Mt. Moon. During their battle, Hitmonlee was able to land hefty damage on Red's Pikachu, Pika, who was aiming for his knee but soon found that his elastic, spring-like legs made the feat virtually impossible. Soon afterward, after Lorelei and Agatha joined the fray (and the latter activated the mind-controlling wristbands that she had Bruno wear), he was used alongside the former's Jynx and the latter's Gastly to defeat Poli, Saur, and Gyara. Hitmonlee was later used in the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc, where he fought with Koga's Ekans against Lance's Dragonite, but to no avail. Hitmonlee's known moves are High Jump Kick, Jump Kick, Rolling Kick, Mega Kick, and Shadow Ball*.

		Onix
		Main article: Bruno's Onix Onix was used to battle Red during their battle on Mt. Moon. Despite a type disadvantage against Red's Gyarados, Gyara, it was able to hold its own and deftly avoid super-effective hits from his Water-type attacks. Afterward, it used its Bind to keep Gyara from attacking, only to take damage from the latter's Bite. It then dug underground to launch a surprise attack, and this time faced off against Saur. However, before that fight could conclude, it was interrupted by a pack of Diglett crossing, and later Bruno's Elite Four comrades Lorelei and Agatha. A while later, it fought Bill and Lt. Surge on Cerise Island. He uses it this time to battle Red again. Onix was used to carry Red and the others off of Cerise Island as it was collapsing.

		Hitmonchan ♂
		Hitmonchan was first seen in Bruno's flashback. In the flashback, Hitmonchan was seen battling with Red's Poliwrath, Poli, whom he defeated by cloaking his Thunder Punch moves in the guise of using Fire Punch and taking damage from the Poliwrath's Double Slap. Hitmonchan specializes in punching, mostly in his elemental punch moves. Hitmonchan's known moves are Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Comet Punch, and Ice Punch.

		Machamp
		Machamp, specialized in chopping, was known for keeping the belt of Machoke, which stored the excess power that normal Machoke do not keep upon evolution. Those powers came in handy when it was able to defeat Poli with them before being subdued by Vee's Pin Missile. In the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc, he used Machamp in the Pokéathlon, being able to break two sets of ten blocks really quickly without losing stamina in the Block Smash portion. However, he was soon overtaken when Gold's team consistently aimed for the blocks' weak spots. None of Machamp's moves are known.

		Bruno gave orders to these Machop to attack Kanto. As they were doing it and when they reached Pewter City, Brock tried to stop them by using his Geodude. None of Machop's moves are known.

		Tyrogue was used in the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc. Bruno used him to smash open rocks leading to Ilex Forest. Tyrogue's only known move is Double Team.

Bruno debuted in Clefairy's Under Training!!. When Red, Clefairy and Pikachu were out in a garden, they noticed Bruno training with his Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. Bruno invited them over, and the first thing he had them do was go under a waterfall. After the waterfall training, he had them break some bricks. Afterwards, Bruno had them meditate. During meditation, Clefairy, for some odd reason, decided to disrupt the training, much to everyone's ire. Afterwards, Bruno revealed himself as one of the Elite Four. Clefairy then started to mess up his hair, which resulted in Clefairy getting kicked out of the dojo.

Bruno called out his Machamp and two Onix to handle Clefairy after forcing Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan to fight each other. They almost managed to defeat Clefairy, only for Pikachu to intervene.

Bruno reappeared in A Challenge to the Elite Four, where it was revealed that he was part of the Johto Elite Four. He, along with Koga and Will, fell from the Elite Four Tower, seemly defeated by Karen. It was later revealed that, after being exhausted from training, Karen decided to tell them a terrible joke, and they fell down the building after hearing it.

When Clefairy started to become disruptive, he forced Hitmonlee to fight Hitmonchan, even though his job was to get rid of Clefairy. Hitmonlee reappeared in A Challenge to the Elite Four all the way on the top floor of the Pokémon League. None of Hitmonlee's moves are known.

The shadowy person resembling Bruno from the first episode of the anime

• In the first episode of the Pokémon anime, a shadowed person greatly resembling Bruno appears, using a Nidorino and an Onix. It has never been officially confirmed whether this person really is Bruno or not, although the similarities become especially apparent in higher-quality versions of the episode.
• Bruno's hair has changed from Generation II to Generation III to a longer, darker style; his skin tone has become lighter as well.
• In Generation III, Bruno's overworld sprite always looks away from the player after being defeated.
• Bruno's original sprite in Generation I and overworld sprites in Generation II and III show him with remarkably closed eyes (somewhat similar to Brock's), similar to his Pokémon Adventures version, but starting in the next generation, he looks the same way he did in the anime.
• Bruno was the first member of the Elite Four who was met in the anime, excluding Koga, who was not a member at the time of his appearance.
• None of Bruno's sprites have ever shown him standing up.
• Bruno, Lance, Koga, Caitlin, and Grimsley are the only Elite Four members who have appeared in more than one generation (excluding remakes).
