Biology
Physiology
Torchic are small baby birds that are covered in orange and yellow downy feathers. Their wings are underdeveloped and are almost useless aside keeping the Pokémon warm. Their legs and feet however are well developed for running and scratching. They also have a crest on their heads which vaguely resembles a flame. They also possess a flame sac much like other fire Pokémon: Vulpix and Flareon.
Gender differences
Male Torchic have a very small black speck on their rears. Females do not have this mark.
Special abilities
Like many Template:Type2s, Torchic is able to breathe fire from its beak.
Behavior
Being a young Pokémon, Torchic are naturally curious and are very inquisitive about things. Thus, they need someone to guide them and to train them. They will follow their trainer with unsteady steps. Individual personalities range from meek to headstrong. Torchic apparently don't like the dark because they can't see what's in front of them.
Habitat
Torchic is rare in the wild, and is most likely to be found under the possession of Trainers that choose it as a starter. However, in the wild it is most likely to be found in Hoenn.

Like her anime counterpart, Sapphire also received a Torchic (nicknamed Toro) from her father Professor Birch, but, unlike May's, it isn't a crybaby, and loves battles like its Trainer. Toro evolved in Dewford Town before a battle that Sapphire was having against Brawly along with Rono, her Aron-become-Lairon. After several concussive battles against Team Aqua and gym leader Flannery, it evolved again to Blaziken in a bout against Winona.

Trivia
- A pre-alpha sketch from before Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire were released portrays a different Torchic with large floppy ears.
- Torchic is the only starter Pokémon available in the wild, being found on the Pokéwalker course Sightseeing, along with Pikachu.
- Torchic is the first starter Pokémon based on a bird, the second being Piplup. Coincidentally, neither evolve into a Flying-type, as both are based on flightless birds.
- Torchic has the lightest weight of all the basic forms of the starters.
- Even though Torchic has no arms, it is able to learn Mega Punch by tutoring in Pokémon Emerald.
- Torchic is the only first stage of a starter Pokémon that has a gender difference (though its own is very easily missed, being only a one-pixel difference), excluding Pikachu.
- It also is in the only starter Pokémon evolutionary line in which all members have gender differences.
- Torchic, Buizel, and Floatzel are also the only Pokémon to have the difference shown only on their back sprites.
- As of Generation V, Torchic and Combusken are the only non-Flying-type Pokémon to learn Mirror Move by leveling up. This trait was shared with final evolved, Blaziken in Generation III.
- However, both Torchic and Combusken are both based on birds, so this makes sense.
- With Tepig, Torchic is the slowest of all the Fire-type starters, with a base speed of only 45.
- Although Torchic is clearly based on a bird, it is not in the Flying egg group. It shares this trait with Delibird, Piplup and its evolutions.
- Torchic is the only fire-type starter that Ash never owned.
Origin
It appears to have been based on a chicken hatchling. Torchic may also be based on the basan, a legendary fire-breathing chicken.
Name origin
Torchic's name is likely a combination of torch and chick.
Achamo is a combination of 赤子 akago, baby, and 軍鶏 shamo, a breed of Japanese chicken once raised for fighting.
In other languages
- German: Flemmli
- French: Poussifeu - From Poussin (chick) and feu (fire).
- Korean: 아차모 Achamo - Derived directly from the Japanese name.
- Chinese (Taiwan): 火稚雞 Huǒ Zhì Jī - "Fire chick".
