Omastar is a sky-blue Ammonoidea Pokémon, with several tentacles and a pale yellow, helix spiralled shell with spikes on its back. Its shell constantly grows, getting heavier over time and thus limiting its mobility. It is the weight of the shell that is most often cited as the cause for Omastar's extinction. Several sharp spikes line the shell's midsection, spanning from its forefront to just a little towards its back. The shell's hem has two circular indents where Omastar's eyes come out. Its eyes have yellow sclera, with vertically-slit pupils. It has an oval mouth with a four-way jawed, fang-like beak. Once caught, it never lets go of prey, immediately biting down on its victim with immense power.
Before its own shell led to its extinction, Omastar swam the seas in search of prey. Even the hard shells of prehistoric Shellder stood no match to Omastar's deadly powerful bite, and were quickly made a meal of by having their insides sucked out.
Omastar also appeared in Fossil Fools, alongside its pre-evolved form Omanyte. These Pokémon were discovered to be living in the Ruins of Alph, but they moved into a museum.
Omanyte and Omastar, Kabuto and Kabutops. It is believed these Pokémon became extinct tens of thousands of years ago. The details of their behavior are shrouded in mystery. Though some have speculated that they may still exist, none of these Pokémon have ever been seen alive.
Omastar, the evolved form of Omanyte. This extinct Pokémon is believed to have used its sharp fangs to break through the shells of its prey in order to feed.
Omastar uses its tentacles to capture its prey. It is believed to have become extinct because its shell grew too large and heavy, causing its movements to become too slow and ponderous.

In early English-language promotional material for Pokémon Red and Blue, Omastar was originally known as "Kargo". This is derived from "escargot" (French for snail).
Omastar is the only Fossil Pokémon whose extinction has been explained: its shell was too heavy for it to move, so it died out from starvation.
This may also be a reference to the giant orthocone, ancestor to the modern octopus. The orthocone resembled an octopus with a long, pointed shell that was slow and cumbersome.
