The Water type (Japanese: みずタイプ Water type) is one of the seventeen types. Notable Trainers that specialize in the Water type include Misty of Cerulean City, Wallace and Juan of Sootopolis City, Crasher Wake of Pastoria City, Cress of Striaton City, and Marlon of Humilau City. Prior to changes in Generation IV all Water-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack.
The Water type (Japanese: みずタイプ Water type) is one of the eighteen types. Water-type moves are super effective against Fire-, Ground-, and Rock Pokémon, while Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric- and Grass moves.

Characteristics
Generation II onward
Defense
Flexheader
Defensively, the Water type is very strong when combined with high defensive stats. As every Water type, with the exception of Magikarp and the Seismitoad evolution line, can use Ice moves to counter Grass types (although Magikarp can learn one Flying move, Bounce, and Seismitoad can learn Poison moves, which can also counter Grass types), and a small number of Water types such as Gyarados, Octillery and the Slowking evolutionary line are capable of learning the Fire moves Flamethrower and Fire Blast which are also capable of countering Grass types, Electric types are the only true threat to Water types. That is not the case if the Pokémon in question have Abilities or subtypes that neutralize or nullifies this weakness. Quagsire, Swampert, Whiscash, Gastrodon, and Seismitoad are all immune, via their secondary type, Ground. Others, such as the Lanturn evolutionary line, the Ludicolo evolutionary line, and Palkia have subtypes that are resistant to Electric.

Water types often have the most balanced attributes, usually coming with decent Attack, Special Attack, and Defense stats, but below average Speed.

Offense
Additional effects
The Water type is also useful offensively. Water-type Pokémon can learn Ice Beam or Ice Punch to deal with Dragon and Grass types, which would make their resistance to Water-type attacks irrelevant. It can be extremely useful to be super-effective against Ground and Rock types when traveling through caves, etc. As a result of these advantages, as well as having to get through water routes using Surf, Waterfall, and even Whirlpool or Dive, most Trainers usually have at least one Water type in their party. Also, double weaknesses to Water are fairly common (largely due to the common Rock/Ground typing) while Kingdra Lotad Lombre Ludicolo Palkia that have a double resistance to Water (all of which are Water types themselves).
During rain (introduced in Generation II) or Primordial Sea (introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), the power of Water-type moves is increased by 50%. During harsh sunlight (introduced in Generation II), the power of Water-type moves is decreased by 50%. During Desolate Land (introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), all Water-type moves will fail.

Contest Properties
The move Soak, introduced in Generation V, causes the target to become a pure Water-type Pokémon.

When used in Contests, Water-type moves typically become Beauty moves, but can also be any of the other four Contest types, excluding Cool.
Water-type Pokémon are weak to the Ice move Freeze-Dry, introduced in Generation VI, despite normally being resistant to Ice-type moves.

Pokémon
Pokémon
As of Generation V, there are Water-type Pokémon or 16.80% of all Pokémon, making it the most common of the seventeen types.
As of Generation IX, Pokémon or % of all Pokémon are Water-type (counting those that are Water-type in at least one of their forms), making it the most common of the eighteen types among Pokémon, with Normal coming in second.  After the introduction of Volcanion in Generation VI, all other types have been paired up with Water at least once, making it the second type to have this trait, after Flying and followed by Psychic.

The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.

Moves
Moves
As of Generation IX, there are 53 Water-type moves, which makes up 5.67% of all moves (excluding those that are Water-type only under certain circumstances), causing it to tie with Dark as the 5th most common type among moves, after Fighting and before Electric.
Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Water-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack.

In the TCG
Water (TCG)
Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Water generally adopts all Ice Pokémon under its typing.
Similar to the games, Water-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Grass and Lightning with no resistances. Water-type Pokémon are strong against Fighting and Fire Pokémon, whilst Grass Pokémon and some Colorless Pokémon can resist this type.

Trivia
Trivia
* Water is the most abundant type, with 109 Pokémon species (111 counting Castform and Rotom), comprising nearly 17% of the entire known National Pokédex. This may be a reference to how water is the most abundant substance on Earth, and how the majority of all species of life live in water.
* Generation I introduced the most Water-type Pokémon of any generation, with 32, and Generation VI introduced the fewest Water-type Pokémon, with nine.
* Every generation has introduced Water-type Pokémon whose names begin with the letters P and S.
* Generation VIII introduced the most Water-type moves of any generation, with twelve, and Generation II and VI introduced the fewest Water-type moves with three.
* At least one dual-type Water/Flying Pokémon has been introduced in each generation.
* Generation II is the only generation to have not introduced a Water-type specialist.
* Every generation has introduced exactly one non-damaging Water-type move.
* Starting in Generation II, Water has the most Pokémon with a specific type.
* Each possible type combination that is doubly weak to Water (, , and ) has been used so far on at least one Pokémon. The same is true for Grass, Flying and Psychic.
* Out of every type, Water has the most Gym Leaders, at eight.
* The Water type has been paired with every other type except the Fire type. This means it has been paired with the highest number of types, tied with the Flying type.
* The Water type has the most Pokémon that evolve via trading, at six.
* Water-type moves are tied with the Dragon type for having the most held items that boost their power: Incense, Incense, Plate, Type-enhancing item, Gem, and the Timespace orbs.
* The Water type has the most Gigantamax forms of all types, at six, as well as the most G-Max Moves, at five.
* The Water type has the most Gym Leaders of its type with a total of six.
* Out of the usual three first partner Pokémon types, Water is the only one to have all of its members — including their respective evolutions — be listed as the same color, namely blue.

The Water type (Japanese: みずタイプ Water type) is one of the eighteen types. Water-type moves are super effective against Fire-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokémon, while Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric- and Grass-type moves.

Battle properties

Note: Type effectiveness multipliers may vary in other games outside the core series.

Generation I

Offensive properties of   Water-type moves
Super effective (×2) Not very effective (×½) No effect (×0)
Ground Rock Fire  Water Grass Dragon None
Defensive properties of   Water-type Pokémon
Weak to (×2) Resists (×½) Immune to (×0)
Grass Electric  Fire Water Ice None

Generation II onward

Offensive properties of   Water-type moves
Super effective (×2) Not very effective (×½) No effect (×0)
Ground Rock Fire  Water Grass Dragon None
Defensive properties of   Water-type Pokémon
Weak to (×2) Resists (×½) Immune to (×0)
Grass Electric  Steel Fire Water Ice None

Additional effects

During rain (introduced in Generation II) or heavy rain (introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), the power of Water-type moves is increased by 50%. During harsh sunlight (introduced in Generation II), the power of Water-type moves is decreased by 50%. During extremely harsh sunlight (introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), all Water-type moves will fail.

The move Soak, introduced in Generation V, causes the target to become a pure Water-type Pokémon.

Water-type Pokémon are weak to the Ice-type move Freeze-Dry, introduced in Generation VI, despite normally being resistant to Ice-type moves.

Pokémon

As of Generation IX, 159 Pokémon or 15.51% of all Pokémon are Water-type (counting those that are Water-type in at least one of their forms), making it the most common of the eighteen types among Pokémon, with Normal coming in second. After the introduction of Volcanion in Generation VI, all other types have been paired up with Water at least once, making it the second type to have this trait, after Flying and followed by Psychic.

The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. Some Pokémon have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.

In the TCG

Main article: Water (TCG)

Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Water generally adopts all Ice-type Pokémon under its typing.

Similar to the games, Water-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Grass and Lightning with no resistances. Water-type Pokémon are strong against Fighting and Fire Pokémon, whilst Grass Pokémon and some Colorless Pokémon can resist this type.
