Biology

In the mouth of Cramorant

Arrokuda is a brown and tan fish Pokémon resembling a barracuda. It has two big black eyes and two small teeth pointing upward, the latter of which it is very proud of. It also has five fins scattered on its body; two pelvic fins, two anal fins, and one dorsal fin. This Pokémon has two red spots behind its jaw, as well as three white scales on each side of its body for a total of six. Arrokuda lastly has three back fins on its tail resembling a ship propeller, starting off tan in color, but having a brown coloring on the end.

Cramorant is the natural predator of Arrokuda, and they grab Arrokuda in their mouth in battle if using Surf or Dive. Cramorant tend to spit out Arrokuda when attacked, however, causing the Rush Pokémon to fly out and smack nearby opponents. In Paldea, Wattrel is Arrokuda's predator.

Arrokuda can only swim in a straight line. Should Arrokuda see any movement near it, it will charge ahead using its sharp pointed jaw; however, its poor eyesight causes it to miss frequently. Its movements also tend to become sluggish when it eats too much, which is typically when Cramorant and Wattrel appear to swallow it up.

Arrokuda and its Evolution, Barraskewda, are the only known Pokémon that can have Propeller Tail as an Ability.

Major appearances

Arrokuda made its animated series debut in Just a Scone's Throw From Here!, where Jessie pulled one out of the Rocket Prize Master. It attacked Goh's Pokémon with Cramorant, only to be defeated by Grookey.

Minor appearances

Arrokuda debuted in Secrets of the Jungle, being eaten by a Cramorant.

An Arrokuda appeared in a flashback that Ludlow fished from the sea in Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!.

Arrokuda appeared in Transform! Hero of the Seas, Palafin.

Multiple Arrokuda appeared in The Flower Tower.

An Arrokuda appeared in Encounters at the Crystal Pool.

Pokémon Adventures

Casey's Arrokuda, nicknamed Kilo, first appeared in Ooh Shiny!! Legendary Equipment. In Gulp!! Gulp Pokémon, it was found by Hop, who helped Casey rescue it from a Cramorant.

Trivia

• Arrokuda was first shown as part of Cramorant's official reveal, but remained unnamed until the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Origin

Arrokuda seems to be based on a barracuda and on fish of the Esox genus, such as the northern pike. It also resembles other predatory fish such as the garpike, the houndfish, and some sturgeon species.

In addition, it appears to draw inspiration from darts and arrows, with its caudal fin being shaped similarly to fletchings. Both Arrokuda and Barraskewda's colors and overall design resemble an Anglo-Saxon brooch fashioned and shaped like a fish.

Name origin

Arrokuda may be a combination of arrow and barracuda.

Sasikamasu may be a combination of 刺し sashi (pricking) and 梭子魚 kamasu (barracuda).
