Biology

Sirfetch'd losing to an Escavalier

Sirfetch'd is an avian Pokémon that resembles a white duck, standing no taller than its pre-evolved form Farfetch'd and retaining its yellow beak, legs, webbed feet, brown eyes, black eyebrow-like marking, and its stubby tail. It has a crest on its head, consisting of three feathers standing upright. Its wings serve as humanoid hands, with the feathers at the end resembling fingers. It carries a massive leek in two parts, wielding the long, sharpened stalk as a lance and using the hard leaves as a shield.

It is said that Sirfetch'd's Evolution was attained by Farfetch'd who have experienced and survived many battles. Sirfetch'd is known to be calm and collected, preferring to fight fairly. Due to its noble nature, Sirfetch'd is often chosen as a motif for paintings; one famous painting in the Galar region shows a Sirfetch'd dueling with an Escavalier. The leek it carries is its most prized possession; it is used as both weapon and food, and maintained for many years. Sirfetch'd is said to place its soul into nurturing the leek it has wielded all its life; it treasures the leek like life itself. Sirfetch'd skillfully wields the leek with impressive finesse, allowing it to perform remarkable feats in combat. Once the leek finally withers, Sirfetch'd will retire from battle for good.

Sirfetch'd and its pre-evolved form are the only known Pokémon capable of using the Leek item.

Sirfetch'd is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Meteor Assault.

Sirfetch'd is playable through obtaining a Unite License. It is a melee all-rounder that starts as Galarian Farfetch'd, which evolves into Sirfetch'd at level 5.

Pixelated Sirfetch'd before its official announcement

• Sirfetch'd was first teased on Pokémon Sword and Shield's official website on September 13, 2019, with its appearance, name, category, and height heavily pixelated — the image was also rotated 90° left, and then horizontally inverted. On the Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese official websites, its name was partially revealed. The link to the page played a Rotom's cry when clicked, implicating it as the cause of the data corruption.
  • The revealed parts of the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese were ナイト naito (Japanese), 나이트 naiteu (Korean), and 兵 bīng (Chinese).
• Sirfetch'd and Farfetch'd are the only Pokémon with an apostrophe in their names.
  • Due to a bug in Pokémon HOME, an unnicknamed Sirfetch'd or Farfetch'd with an English, Spanish, or Italian language of origin that is transferred into HOME will be treated as a nicknamed Pokémon, due to HOME assigning a different character for the apostrophe in the species names ("Farfetch’d" and "Sirfetch’d").
• Despite "Sir" being a male honorific, Sirfetch'd are equally likely to be female.
• Sirfetch'd can be seen as a parallel to Cursola. They are both mono-typed Evolutions of regional forms whose original forms do not evolve. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, at the Stow-on-Side Stadium and during the Champion Cup Finals, Bea in Pokémon Sword uses Sirfetch'd in her team, while Allister in Pokémon Shield uses Cursola in his team.
• Galarian Farfetch'd was released in Pokémon GO on June 17, 2020, shortly after Galarian Meowth and Zigzagoon. Although the latter two could evolve into Perrserker and Obstagoon upon release, respectively, Galarian Farfetch'd couldn't evolve into Sirfetch'd at the time. Sirfetch'd was later added to coincide with the release of The Crown Tundra for the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass on October 22, 2020.

Origin

The idea for Sirfetch'd and the giant leek it carries originated from the fact that leeks native to the United Kingdom (which serves as the inspiration for the Galar region) are considerably larger than those native to Japan. In particular, the leek halves are modeled after medieval weapons: a shield and a sword (or a lance). As such, Sirfetch'd may be based on a knight, as well as a Pekin duck.

Like Farfetch'd, Sirfetch'd may be inspired by the Japanese saying 鴨(かも)が葱(ねぎ)を背負(しょ)って来る kamo ga negi o shotte kuru, literally translating to "a duck comes bearing spring onions". As a saying, it means "easy target" or "golden opportunity". Sirfetch'd carrying a leek may also be inspired by the fact that the leek is one of the national symbols of Wales, part of the United Kingdom.

Sirfetch'd's appearance may also be based on Sir Lancelot du Lac (literally "Sir Lancelot of the Lake"), one of the members of the Knights of the Round Table. In Arthurian legend, before he revealed his identity to King Arthur, he was known as the "White Knight" for his white armor. The Lancelot leek, which is a wild onion variant named after him, may also be referenced. Sirfetch'd's overall personality may be based on the code of chivalry.

The official Pokémon Sword and Shield website mentions a painting depicting Sirfetch'd battling an Escavalier. This may be a reference to the motif of knights fighting snails, which is sometimes found in medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, as well as Escavalier's own references to medieval jousting.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Shigeru Ohmori stated that Sirfetch'd's design is not inspired by Farfetch'd's scrapped Evolution from the Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo, but is instead a new one fitting for a region based on the United Kingdom.

Name origin

Sirfetch'd may be a combination of Sir and Farfetch'd.

Negigaknight may be a combination of 葱 negi (spring onion), the prefix giga-, and knight. It may also be a pun on 葱がないと negi ga nai to (must have a spring onion).
