Sobble (Japanese: メッソン Messon) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

It evolves into Drizzile starting at level 16, which evolves into Inteleon starting at level 35.

Along with Grookey and Scorbunny, Sobble is one of three starter Pokémon of Galar available at the beginning of Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Along with Grookey and Scorbunny, it was the first Generation VIII Pokémon to be revealed to the public on February 27, 2019.

Biology

Sobble is a small lizard-like Pokémon. It has light-blue skin, with darker blue patches on its cheeks and the tip of its curled tail, and a lighter blue belly and face. It has white eyes with dark blue irises. It also has a yellow fin on the top of its head, held by a dark blue spine. Sobble has thin limbs, each of them ending in two curved hands resembling those of a chameleon. It can use these to stick to walls and easily climb them.

Sobble can run around as both a quadruped and a biped, and use its forelimbs as arms. It has the ability to change the patterns and colors on its body when touching water, allowing it to camouflage itself. Due to being a bit timid, when Sobble gets nervous or embarrassed, it secretes water from its body like sweat in order to disappear into its surroundings. If Sobble feels threatened, it will start bawling and spreading its tears around the area. These tears are said to be as potent as 100 onions, and can cause anyone near it to start crying uncontrollably, which it will use as a distraction in order to escape.

Goh's Sobble

Sobble debuted in Toughing It Out!, where it briefly observed Ash and Goh's training. In Sobbing Sobble!, Goh caught it, and it joined his team. In Not Too Close for Comfort!, it evolved into Drizzile, which later evolved into Inteleon in Detective Drizzile!.

Minor appearances

A Sobble appeared in a fantasy alongside the other starter Pokémon in Getting More Than You Battled For!.

In Must Be Our Heroes and the Witch!, a Sobble appeared in a fantasy.

A Trainer's Sobble appeared in HZ019.

Trivia

• In Lental's Photodex, Sobble is not located right next to its counterparts, Grookey and Scorbunny.
• Sobble is the first Pokémon to be featured in the Beyond the Pokédex series.

Origin

Sobble appears to be based on the veiled chameleon due to its color scheme being similar to that of the males. The way this species collects water droplets from its casque (the helmet-like protrusion on top of its head) into its mouth could resemble tears, which could explain the tear-like patches on Sobble's face, its actual tears when crying, and its Water typing. Additionally, its typing and the crest on its head are features that can also be more loosely related to basilisk lizards.

Name origin

Sobble may be a combination of sob and bubble or dribble.

Messon may be a combination of メソメソ mesomeso (sobbing) and chameleon.
