Special abilities
The spines that cover its body are filled with a toxin which is known to cause fainting. It is able to fire these spines from its body by swallowing large amounts of water. This ability also makes this Pokémon appear bigger than it actually is, making it less vulnerable to predator attacks.
Behavior
When faced with a larger opponent, Qwilfish swallows as much water as it can to match the opponent's size. Qwilfish also finds swimming somewhat challenging, due to its round form.
Qwilfish, the Balloon Pokémon. The quills covering the entire body have evolved from scales. A Qwilfish can cause its body to swell in order to shoot its needles in all directions.
A swarm of Qwilfish appeared in Volume 10, angered by pollution that occurred as a result of an accident that occurred during the construction of the Battle Tower. Crystal captured all of them with her skills.
In order to attack the enemy all over the body with its poisonous sting, the Qwilfish has to take in a lot of water and expand up to several times of its actual size.*
Qwilfish sucks in water, inflating itself. This Pokémon uses the pressure of the water it swallowed to shoot toxic quills all at once from all over its body. It finds swimming somewhat challenging.

Conversely, it is compatible with the Generation IV and V TM that teaches Explosion, but incompatible with the Generation III Move Tutor for the same move. However, it is compatible with the Generation III Move Tutor for Selfdestruct, a weaker version of Explosion.
Qwilfish shares the same species name with Jigglypuff's evolutionary family and Drifloon. They are all known as the Balloon Pokémon.
It is the only Balloon Pokémon that neither evolves into or from another Pokémon.
Qwilfish is based on both pufferfish and porcupinefish. Its ability to shoot its toxic quills somewhat resembles explosions, which could mean it may have been based on a naval mine.
