List of cross-generational evolution families

This is a list of Pokémon families including evolutions from different generations. For example, Pichu (a Generation II Pokémon) evolves into Pikachu (a Generation I Pokémon).

A few of these Pokémon, as a result of new evolutions, become a part of evolutionary families with branched evolutions. Pokémon which evolve into a Pokémon of a previous generation, instead of from it, are always baby Pokémon.

Later generations have modified old families by introducing regional forms of older Pokémon adapted for life in different regions. Certain families entirely consist of variant forms while others share an unevolved state before diversifying, much like a branched evolution. Certain Pokémon will only evolve from a specific regional form and, therefore, have no counterpart.

Even when not related by evolution, regional forms of the same family are still related via breeding. A Pokémon species that has a regional form that is hatched from an Egg will be in the form corresponding to the region in which the Egg was produced, regardless of the parent's regional form. However, if a parent of a foreign form is holding an Everstone and is from the same evolutionary family as the offspring, then the offspring will hatch into that parent's form.

Trivia

• Generation IV introduced the most evolutionary relatives to Pokémon from previous generations, with 29, and Generation VI introduced the fewest evolutionary relatives to Pokémon from previous generations, with only one, Sylveon. In Generations VII, VIII, and IX, some regional forms can cross-generation evolve.
• Some Pokémon in cross-generational evolution families have unique distinctions:
  • Roselia is the only Pokémon to have both a pre-evolution and an evolution (Budew and Roserade, respectively) introduced in the same generation outside its debut generation.
  • Porygon is the only Pokémon to have an evolution introduced in a later generation that was later able to evolve once again.
  • Scyther is the only Pokémon in a branched evolution family with more than two members to have each one introduced in a different generation.
• Chansey, Mr. Mime, Electabuzz, Magmar, and Porygon have each member of a three-stage evolutionary family introduced in a different generation.
