It evolves into Vibrava starting at level 35, who evolves into Flygon starting at level 45.

Biology

Physiology

Trapinch is an orange, bug-like Pokémon with a large jaw. Trapinch has a roundish body with a white underside and short, stump-like legs. Trapinch has a big head in proportion to the rest of its body. Despite resembling an insect, Trapinch is actually a Template:Type2.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Trapinch's main weapon is its jaws, which can crush boulders. Trapinch are also known for their digging skills. Trapinch is one of the few non-legendary unevolved Pokémon that can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact. Trapinch can also go a whole week without access to any water.

Behavior

Trapinch are patient Pokémon; despite this, they are avid hunters. After building pits in sand, they patiently await for their prey to fall. Because Trapinch's head is so big, it finds getting upright if tipped onto its back difficult.

Habitat

Trapinch live in sandy deserts. Trapinch's nest is a deep, inescapable pit dug in the sand. Trapinch have also been known to burrow complex tunnels deep underground.

In the anime

Trapinch in the anime

Trapinch made its debut in Beg, Burrow and Steal. The Trapinch of an area had dug a complex underground labyrinth. One reseacher named Hal wanted to find a lake that he claimed to see when he was a little boy. When Ash, May, Brock, Max, Hal, another researcher named Elisa, and Team Rocket got lost in the labyrinth, they eventually found the underground lake Hal was talking about.

Trapinch also make a cameo as one of Noland's Pokémon in Numero Uno Articuno.

In Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part Two, Solana used her Capture Styler on a Trapinch and had it use Rock Tomb to trap a Golem, Graveler, Nidoking, Rhyhorn and Tyranitar that were attacking Dawn's, Brock's and Officer Jenny's Pokémon.

A Trapinch also appeared in All Dressed Up with Somewhere To Go. It was dressed up as a Turtwig.

A Trapinch appeared in A Rivalry to Gible On!.

Trivia

  • Trapinch has a higher base Attack stat than its evolved form Vibrava. It also has the same base Attack stat as Vibrava's evolution, Flygon.
  • Trapinch evolves at level 35, later than any Pokémon involved in a three-stage evolution by level only. Rhyhorn evolves the latest at level 42, into Rhydon, but Rhydon evolves into Rhyperior via trade, not level.
  • The Trapinch-line along with the Gligar-line are the only evolutionary families to have no Template:Type2 Pokémon and be in the Bug Egg Group.
  • Out of all unevolved Pokémon, Trapinch can learn the most moves by leveling up which its evolutions cannot, excluding Pokémon who evolve via evolutionary stones, such as Skitty and Growlithe.
  • Along with Dratini, Larvitar, and Remoraid, Trapinch is one of the very few basic-stage Pokémon to learn Hyper Beam by level up.
    • Out of the four, this is the only one that cannot be found in the Johto region (excluding the Johto Safari Zone).
  • Trapinch is able to learn Gust as an egg move despite not having any wings. This is likely because its evolutions do have wings.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

It is based on the larval stage of the antlion, who spend their days in sandy pits before maturing into a winged, adult stage.

Name origin

Trapinch's name is a combination of trap and pinch.

Nuckrar may be a contraction of nutcracker, a reference to Trapinch's nutcracker-like jaws.

In other languages

  • German: Knacklion - A combination of Knack (snap) and the English antlion.
  • French: Kraknoix - A corruption of craque-noix (nut-cracker).
  • Korean: 톱치 Topchi
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 大顎蟻 Dà È Yǐ - Literally "Big jaw ant".
