Pokémon world locations

Altar of the Sunne (Japanese: 日輪の祭壇 Altar of the Sun) is a location on Poni Island in Alola, located at the far end of Vast Poni Canyon.

While ordinarily it is only accessible in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Ultra Sun, it can be accessed in Pokémon Moon and Pokémon Ultra Moon after becoming Champion by traveling through the Ultra Wormhole in the Altar of the Moone.

During the story of Pokémon Sun, the player travels to Ultra Space from the Altar of the Sunne using Solgaleo's power.

An entrance can be seen on the other side of the Dragonium Z's pedestal from the trial in Vast Poni Canyon. It will lead the player to an immensely deep and vast canyon with an extremely long staircase with holes in some spots on the sides. At the top of it, there will be three staircases that get thinner and shorter progressively. At the top of the second, there will be paths leading in a circle on both sides. There are also two pedestals bearing the Sunne symbol on both sides of the third staircase, which leads to a center area with a rhombus-like shape with a large, Sunne symbol in the center. On the left and right of this are paths to stone "islands" with water surrounding them. These appear on each side of a crevice in the middle that is filled with water. The water surrounding the islands flows from a small stream that connects to two spires that lead to a giant circular door resting on a huge mass of rock, but it only opens in a certain part of the storyline. When it does, the altar shoots a laser-like beam toward the sun pattern, which is where Nebby, now a Cosmoem, would position itself to evolve into Solgaleo.

Ultra Wormhole

In Pokémon Sun, after becoming Champion, if the player has Solgaleo in the party at night or Lunala during the day, they can open the dimensional distortion into an Ultra Wormhole and travel to an alternate world. This world experiences the daytime when the other world is in the night and vice versa, similar to Pokémon Moon. Unlike Pokémon Moon, however, this world's time is not offset by 12 hours from the other world's; rather, whenever the player enters this world, it is always the start of either the day or the night (6 AM or 6 PM), from which point time progresses normally so long as the player remains in the world. In this world, the Altar of the Sunne is also replaced by the Altar of the Moone, while the Lake of the Moone is replaced by the Lake of the Sunne. All other aspects (such as the Pokémon that can be found and the fashion items that can be bought) remain the same as in Pokémon Sun in this world. Traveling through the Ultra Wormhole deposits the player at the Altar of the Moone, where the distortion remains open as an Ultra Wormhole (meaning the player can return at any time without needing Solgaleo or Lunala in their party).

In Pokémon Moon, the player can access the Altar of the Sunne by creating an Ultra Wormhole at the Altar of the Moone to travel there. At the Altar of the Sunne, the distortion remains open as an Ultra Wormhole and the player can return to their own world at any time (without needing Solgaleo or Lunala in their party).

In Pokémon Ultra Sun, Necrozma's presence in the party will allow the player to travel to the Altar of the Moone in the reverse world from the dimensional distortion, provided it is in its Dusk Mane form at night or its Dawn Wings form during the day.

Altar of the Sunne in the anime

The Altar of the Sunne debuted in A Dream Encounter!, where Lusamine, Faba, Wicke, and Professor Burnet investigated reported sightings of the Ultra Beasts, only to find nothing.

The altar made further appearances from Family Determination! to 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!. Lillie and Gladion traveled there in order to get help from Alola's Legendary Pokémon in order to save Lusamine from Ultra Space, being followed and soon joined up by Ash, Professor Kukui, and the rest of Lillie's classmates. At the altar, the group was surprised by the sudden appearance of the four guardian deities of Alola, who showed them the birth of Nebby, which Ash had previously witnessed in a dream. The guardians then proceeded hold a ritual for Nebby, allowing it to evolve into Solgaleo. After Ash had gotten his Z-Ring upgraded into a Z-Power Ring by the guardian deities, he and Nebby were able to use Searing Sunraze Smash to open up an Ultra Wormhole for Ash, his classmates, and Gladion to travel through into Ultra Space. After rescuing Lusamine, the group returned to the altar through another wormhole.

The altar appeared in a flashback in The Professors' New Adventure!, where it was revealed that Nebby had left after the group's return to their own world, having returned to living in the wild.

The altar reappeared in Filling the Light with Darkness!, where the Ultra Guardians met up with Lusamine, Faba, Wicke, and Professor Burnet, soon also joined by Gladion. Once there, Lusamine led the Ultra Guardians to ruins the had been recently discovered inside the altar, where they saw ancient murals depicting "the Blinding One". When they returned from the ruins, they witnessed a Lunala emerging from an Ultra Wormhole, being chased by a Necrozma.
