Memorial Hill is a burial site for the old, mighty families of Alola. It is said to have been established at this site due to the proximity of the Ruins of Life to the north, the belief being that those buried here wanted to be laid to rest close to the Akala Islandguardian deity, Tapu Lele. Being the most notable gravesite in Alola, people from all over the region tend to travel here to see the graves. Some of these people are Trainers, ready to challenge others like them to battle. Appropriately for the setting, Ghost-type Pokémon can commonly be found in the tall grass here.

Memorial Hill debuted in Homecoming and the Brilliant Professional Golfer, where Sun, Moon, Mallow, and Lana arrived there after receiving a distress call from Kiawe, who had been attacked by someone. Shortly after arriving, the group found an unconscious Kiawe lying on the ground, defeated. A group of Team Skull Grunts appeared soon after, claiming that they were the ones who defeated Kiawe, and challenged the others to a battle. Kiawe, regaining consciousness, told Sun that the Grunts were not the ones who beat him, and revealed that Sun's Litten, Dollar, had a Firium Z hidden in its fur. Sun, Moon, and Kiawe then headed for the Ruins of Life, while Mallow and Lana stayed behind to battle the Grunts.
Memorial Hill later reappeared in a flashback in Tyrant!! The Fiendish Man!, revealing that Sun's great-grandfather had been buried there. Looking at his grave, Sun had resolved to gather 100 million yen to get his great-grandfather's island back from the Aether Foundation, and asked his great-grandfather's three AlolanMeowth to help him in the task. However, only one of them, Cent, had chosen to come with him, while the other two returned to living in the wild.
