Melemele Island in the anime

Melemele Island serves as the main setting for Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, due to it being the location of the Pokémon School. It was first introduced in Alola to New Adventure!, where Ash and his mother Delia arrived to deliver a Pokémon Egg to Samson Oak. While there, Ash found out about the Pokémon School, and decided to stay behind and attend it. He also learned that the island's guardian deity, Tapu Koko, had taken a special interest in him.

Bewear's den, home to Bewear and her child Stufful, is located somewhere in the forests of Melemele. The den also served as the Team Rocket trio's base of operations while in Alola.

Ash and Goh visited Melemele Island on one of their research trips in That New Old Gang of Mine!. The boys attended a welcome party at the Pokémon School arranged by Ash's former classmates while Goh caught himself a Pyukumuku and Alolan Exeggutor.

Melemele Island's main settlement of Hau'oli City is home to many of Ash's friends including Sophocles, Lillie, Lana and Mallow. Professor Kukui, his wife Professor Burnet and their child Lei live on the coast on the Hau'oli Outskirts. Iki Town, meanwhile, is where many Trainers challenge Kahuna Hala in a grand trial as a part of the island challenge.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc

Moon was seen at Melemele Island in her arrival at Alola, where she met Sun and delivered a Rotom to Professor Kukui while also coming in contact with Tapu Koko. The island kahunas decided to hold a competition to choose a person for an island challenge, and both Sun and Moon came to participate in it.

After battling the Masked Royal, Guzma, and Gladion, Sun managed to win the tournament, earning him an island challenge amulet and sending him on a journey to appease the enraged guardian deities.
