The world had all of its light stolen by Necrozma. In the center of the city is Megalo Tower, a building that provides artificial light to replace the light Necrozma had taken previously and to act as a prison to keep it from escaping to other worlds.
It is in the homeworld of the Ultra Recon Squad, the Ultra Beast Poipole, and its evolved form Naganadel. Poipole are also stated to not only be numerous in population, but also popular enough to be trained as first partner Pokémon for its residents.

History
Background
Many years prior to the events of the games, the ancestors of the Ultra Recon Squad attempted to gain control of Ultra Necrozma in order to recreate the light it shares. This injured Necrozma, causing it to become aggressive, transforming its body into a black prism-like shape, and putting the Pokémon in constant pain, seeking out the light that it once had. According to Professor Kukui, pieces of its body were chipped off and scattered creating the Z-Crystals and Sparkling Stones that are used to form Z-RingsSM/Z-Power RingsUSUM found in Alola. Necrozma then attempted to recover its power and original state by stealing the city's light, which resulted in the entire world being shrouded in darkness. The inhabitants, however, managed to lock Necrozma up in Megalo Tower for its violence, preventing it from escaping.
At some point in the past, Necrozma escaped its prison and travelled to Alola to steal its light as well, but it was defeated and banished from the region by Alola's guardian deities and a human youth.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
After Necrozma absorbs Nebby at the Altar of the SunneUS/Altar of the MooneUM and steals Alola's light like it did in the past, it flees back to Ultra Megalopolis. The player chases Necrozma down with the Ultra Recon Squad's LunalaUS/SolgaleoUM, travelling there and making their way to the top of the Megalo Tower. The youth then faces the newly transformed Ultra Necrozma and defeats it, resulting in the light returning to Alola and Nebby being freed from its grasp, allowing them to return home, while Necrozma fled to Mount Lanakila.
Geography
The Ultra Megalopolis is a gigantic, futuristic-looking city. The buildings are all black and shaped like prisms, their walls are also made of a reflective material. Due to being in a lightless world, the Megalo Tower was built in the center of the city, acting as the city's artificial sun that'll spread the light and the warmth throughout the whole city through the buildings' reflective walls.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc
Ultra Megalopolis first appeared in Meeting the Ultra Recon Squad. Zossie, Sun, and Moon arrived there after using Ultra Warp Ride with Lunala to traverse through Ultra Space. Shortly after arriving, a Stakataka appeared to battle with Necrozma, forcing Sun and Moon to battle with it. After they had managed to subdue it, Necrozma appeared from Megalo Tower, having reacted to Lunala's presence. Shortly afterwards, Lusamine arrived there as well, accompanied by a small army of Aether Foundation Employees. After fusing herself with a Nihilego, she started attempting to capture Necrozma for herself with a large supply of Beast Balls. During the capture operation, Sun used one of the Beast Balls that Lusamine had dropped to capture Stakataka, adding it to his party with the nickname "Drachma". Eventually Sun, Moon, and Lusamine were sucked back to Alola through an Ultra Wormhole.

Trivia
- As Ultra Megalopolis is part of Ultra Space, if any Pikachu, Cubone, or Exeggcute is evolved there, it evolves into the regular form of Raichu, Marowak, or Exeggutor respectively, rather than its Alolan form.
- There are residents other than the Ultra Recon Squad in Ultra Megalopolis; however, they are never seen in-game, only mentioned to be hiding from Necrozma and later cheering in celebration after its defeat by the player.
- In the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc of Pokémon Adventures, unlike the games, these inhabitants appear walking around the city, but they are blacked out. In the same arc, Moon takes note of their uncommon appearance, pointing out that their hair and eye colors are likely the result of adaptation to their lightless world.
