Phanpy (Japanese: ゴマゾウ Gomazou) is a Ground-type Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Phanpy are blue elephant Pokémon that are quite small in stature. Unlike its evolved form, it has a cute appearance. It has two red pads on each of its big ears and another on the bridge of its nose, which is also quite long.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Despite its small size, Phanpy is quite strong, and can easily carry an adult human on its back. Its trunk is also quite sensitive.
Behavior
It is a timid Pokémon that flees very easily. However, it has a very affectionate side and can be very friendly, even if it doesn't know its own strength. During the deserted morning hours, Phanpy comes ashore where it deftly uses its trunk to take a shower. When others gather around, they thoroughly douse each other with water. Phanpy can be seen drying their soaking-wet bodies at the edge of water. For its nest, Phanpy digs a vertical pit in the ground at the edge of a river. It marks the area around its nest with its trunk to let the other Phanpy know that the area has been claimed. Phanpy's big ears serve as broad fans, and when it becomes hot, it flaps its ears busily to cool down.
Habitat
While it is normally found in rocky regions and terrain, it also likes lakes and watersides. Although normally found in Johto and the Sevii Islands, there have also been sightings in Kanto, Orre and Sinnoh. They have also been imported to the Hoenn Safari Zone.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
In the episode Hatching a Plan it is seen that baby Pokémon such as Ash's Phanpy needs to be lured by food to be captured the first time.
In the anime
Major appearances
Ash's Phanpy
Phanpy made its debut appearance in the anime in Hatching a Plan. It hatched from an Egg that Ash Ketchum received in Extreme Pokémon. It evolved into Donphan in Reversing the Charges.
Minor appearances
Phanpy first appeared in Spell of the Unown, however, it was just a Pokémon that Molly Hale dreamed up and made real by the power of the Unown. Molly's imaginary Phanpy was able to defeat Brock's Onix with only one Rollout attack.
A Phanpy appeared in The Saffron Con! as a Pokémon owned by a Coordinator.

Trivia
- Phanpy can be seen as a parallel to Teddiursa. Both of them are Generation II Pokémon. Phanpy is exclusive to Pokémon Silver* and HeartGold, while Teddiursa is exclusive to Pokémon Gold*, and SoulSilver. They both also have one evolution each and both have Pickup as an Ability, while both their evolved forms do not.
- Phanpy and Teddiursa, along with their evolutions, are the only Pokémon to swap version-exclusive status between localizations.
- Despite being a Ground type, Phanpy does not learn any ground type moves via level up.
Origin
This Pokémon is based on an elephant calf.
Name origin
Phanpy is derived from elephant. Py may have been added to designate Phanpy in the diminutive to reflect its small size and its infantile appearance.
Gomazou may be a combination of 当歳駒 tōsaigoma (yearling) and 象 zō (elephant).
