Excadrill is a bipedal, mole-like Pokémon with a dark-brown body with diagonal, red splotches. Three markings are on its front, resembling scratch marks, with two under each arm, and two on its back. It has short legs with small, narrow feet, each containing three toes. Its small white face is long and thin, tipped by its pink nose. Its eyes are set back, on either side of the bridge of the nose. Under them, on each side, are two thin, red stripes. A large blade roughly twice as large as its face extends from its forehead. The top of the blade contains two smaller blades, resembling fins. Its arms are thick and have three large blades instead of fingers, with two smaller blades on top of the middle ones. On its knees, halfway down its arm, and just behind where its forehead meets its face, are small red spots.
Excadrill can straighten its entire body, allowing it to spin like a drill. It has the ability to cut through iron and steel plating and it can dig at speeds of over 90 mph (150 km/h). Known as the "Drill King", it uses its excellent digging abilities to build a complex network of tunnels for its nest at more than 300 feet (100 meters) below the surface. Its tunneling can be both beneficial and harmful to humans, as it can help workers with its swift digging prowess, but it can be detrimental to underground structures, such as subway tunnels.
Excadrill, the Subterrene Pokémon, and the evolved form of Drilbur. Excadrill can dig maze-like underground tunnels for over 100 meters and is powerful enough to cut through thick iron plates using its steel claws.
For a portion of the first day of the round of the Wild Area News for April 28 to May 11, 2020, ★ Drilbur raids originating from Shield came with the illegal move Hydro Pump. The same raids for the rest of the event's duration, or hosted from Sword, come with the correct move, Scratch. Players who caught a Drilbur with Hydro Pump cannot trade or battle online with it unless that move is deleted. These erroneous Drilbur otherwise function like other Drilbur, and can evolve into Excadrill with Hydro Pump. Additionally, while Dynamaxed, these Drilbur and Excadrill also have access to Max Geyser, which is typically unobtainable as neither can legitimately learn any Water-type attacks.
Excadrill seems to be based on a mole, though it also shares characteristics with digging tools such as shovels and drills. When it is folded up, the spikes on its claws and horn give it a resemblance to the drill of a roadheader, a mining vehicle used to bore tunnels underground. It may also be based on subterrenes, subterranean drilling vehicles sometimes called "battle moles", as suggested by its English category.
Excadrill may be a combination of excavate and drill.
Doryuzu may be a combination of ドリル doriru (drill), 土竜 doryū (mole), and 渦 uzu (spiral or swirl).
