The ninth generation[1] (Japanese: 第九世代 ninth generation) of Pokémon games is the ninth installment of the Pokémon video game series. The ninth generation began with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on November 18, 2022 and continued with The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC packs.

Generation IX was first revealed via a Pokémon Presents video presentation on February 27, 2022, which revealed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

History

The ninth generation of Pokémon was announced with the reveal of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on February 27, 2022. These games were released worldwide on November 18, 2022.

Connectivity

Advances in gameplay

  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are open-world games in which areas are seamlessly connected. The areas in the game can be visited in any order.[2]
  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet feature multiplayer with up to four players simultaneously via the Union Circle, enabling trading and battling between players as well as allowing them to travel through the game's areas and hold picnics together.[2]
  • The addition of 103 new Pokémon, bringing the total to 1008.
  • The addition of 48 new moves, bringing the total to 898.
  • The addition of 31 new Abilities, bringing the total to 298.
  • A new region to explore, the Paldea region, based on the Iberian Peninsula.
  • A new villainous team, Team Star.
  • The introduction of the regional forms for Tauros and Wooper.
  • A new battle mechanic, Terastallization, which encases the Pokémon in gems and enhances or alters their attributes through their Tera Type.
