The S.S. Anne (Japanese: サント・アンヌ号 St. Annu) is a well-known luxury cruise liner which sails the world, stopping annually in Vermilion City, Kanto.
In the anime, it is referred to as St. Anne, which is derived from its Japanese name.
Overview
To get on the S.S. Anne in the games, players must first obtain an S.S. Ticket by helping out Bill at his home on Route 25.
The S.S. Anne is accessible from the Vermilion Harbor. This luxury cruise liner contains many Pokémon Trainers, including several Gentlemen and Sailors. In Generations III and VII, in one room on the first floor, a lady will restore a Trainer's party on hand to full health. Before reaching the captain's cabin, the player will encounter their rival and battle him.
After the rival has been defeated, the player will be able to enter the Captain's quarters, where they will find him seasick. By choosing to help him by giving him a backrub, players will be able to get HM01 (Cut)RGBYFRLG or learn the Secret Technique Chop DownPE.
Once the captain is healed, the S.S. Anne will sail away the moment player exits the ship. Although it is said to return once a year, none of the games in which it appears have a time system capable of measuring this, and the ship will not be seen again.
As the player cannot return to the ship once it has left, all of the items on the ship and in the port can be permanently missed without the player ever obtaining them. Alternatively, if the player already obtained the HM01, but then loses a battle inside and S.S. Anne and blacks out (thus returning to the Pokémon Center), the ship will remain in place until the player enters the ship again and leaves it normally. In Generation I games, the player is also able to use a glitch to re-enter the ship after it has left.
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the Seagallop ferries become available on the Vermilion Harbor after the S.S. Anne has departed. The Seagallop ferries can be used to travel to, from, and between the Sevii Islands.
In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Mina, a Trial Captain from Alola, misses the boat on her way back home. She will battle the player daily at the port while waiting for the next ship.
Skipping the S.S. Anne
- Main article: Sequence breaking → S.S. Anne bypassing
In Generations I and III, if the player did not obtain the HM01 (Cut) yet but already has a Pokémon with Cut (such as a Pokémon traded from another game, or a glitch Pokémon), they may skip the S.S. Anne and continue the game normally.
If the player obtains a Pokémon with Surf, as well as the Soul Badge (to enable the use of Surf outside of battle), and the S.S. Anne has not departed yet, the player will be able to surf on the water near the S.S. Anne, as well as reach the ground tiles surrounding the water and see a truck parked there. The truck serves no purpose in Generation I, but has a hidden Lava Cookie in Generation III.
In Generation III only, if the player enters Lavender Town without having battled the rival in S.S. Anne, this battle will be permanently unavailable as the rival will not be found in S.S. Anne anymore.
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the first trip to the Sevii Islands (where the player is invited by Bill after Blaine has been defeated) is normally available even if the S.S. Anne is still docked at the Vermilion Harbor. The player will also receive the Tri-Pass and be able to freely use the Seagallop to travel between the first three islands. However, once this mission is over and the player returns to mainland Kanto, they will not be able to travel to the Sevii Islands again until the HM01 is obtained and the S.S. Anne leaves the Vermilion Harbor.
In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as obtaining the Secret Technique Chop Down from the captain of the S.S. Anne is a requirement for entering the Vermilion Gym, the ship and the rival battle aboard it cannot be skipped. Additionally, because none of the Trainers will battle the player once they learn the Secret Technique, the player cannot lose to one of these Trainers to black out and prevent the S.S. Anne from departing. Unlike in Generations I and III, the harbor is not considered a part of the S.S. Anne and can still be accessed after the ship has left, and the area with the truck can be accessed once the player has learned the Secret Technique Sea Skim. This area now contains a hidden Revive, which renews occasionally.

The truck
In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, a truck is placed in the S.S. Anne's port, which seems to serve no evident purpose except as scenery, and was programmed into the game as a floor tile. With scenery being very sparse in the Generation I games, and this being one of the few sprites not used anywhere else, fans began speculating that another purpose existed for this truck. The truck cannot be accessed without Surf, which the player would not normally have or be able to use before the S.S. Anne departs.
In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, once the S.S. Anne leaves, the player can no longer access the harbor, preventing them from seeing the truck if they attempt to return once they can use Surf. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the player is no longer prevented from accessing the harbor once the S.S. Anne leaves, so they can freely return to see the truck as soon as their partner learns the Secret Technique Sea Skim.
There are several ways the player can access the truck in Generations I and III:
- Trade in a Pokémon that knows Cut, so that there is no need to obtain HM01 (Cut).
- In Generation I, after obtaining HM01 (Cut), lose a battle on the S.S. Anne so that the player black outs and returns to the last Pokémon Center they visited, without the S.S. Anne departing, allowing them to return later with Surf. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, this method does not work, as the ship will simply depart when the player re-enters the harbor.
- In Generation I, skip Vermillion Gym (which requires Cut or Surf to access) and return once Surf and the Soul Badge have been obtained. Since Cut is required to access Route 9 and hence progress through the game, this requires sequence breaking in order to get access to Fuchsia City to earn the Soul Badge.
- In Generation I, a glitch allows the player to bypass the sailor who normally blocks the entrance after the ship has departed.
A rumor claimed that the truck could be moved with Strength and Mew could be found underneath it. This rumor is untrue. In Generation I, there is nothing to be found around the truck at all, but in FireRed and LeafGreen, a Lava Cookie is hidden to the south of the truck. In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, a Revive that respawns once per day is found in the same location.
A Beauty in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness's Quick Battle Mode in the Vs. Mode makes a reference to the truck before the battle starts with a line from a song she is writing: "There's no Pokémon under a truck, maybe you'll just find a Muk!"
The Beyond the Pokédex episode on Mew acknowledges the Mew rumor, with Spruce mentioning having been told as a child that a Mew was hiding under the truck on the docks in Vermillion City, and that a Lava Cookie is instead located there in FireRed and LeafGreen.[1]
Return
After the S.S. Anne leaves Vermilion City, it never returns. However, in the Generation I games, one rumor claimed that if the player entered the Hall of Fame 365 times, the ship would return with more powerful opponents on board, due to an NPC in Red and Blue explaining that the ship was a luxury liner for Trainers that visited Vermilion once a year. However, this rumor is untrue.
Anti-Piracy Message
Shortly after the release of FireRed & LeafGreen, internet users began circulating a screenshot which depicted the ferryman just outside the harbor telling the player "By the way: if you like this game, buy it or die." Those sharing the image claimed that it was an anti-piracy measure, which was corroborated by anecdotal reports from people who played pirated copies on older emulators that were in wide use circa 2004. Because the message could not be found when playing on newer emulators, its absence was widely explained as the result of the software more effectively circumventing the game's copy protection measures. In reality, however, the message was hacked into a single ROM image that was widely distributed online in the early 2000s before being unknowingly superseded by a ROM of the untouched base game. When examining the latter's code in a hex editor, the alleged anti-piracy measure is nowhere to be found.[2]

The St. Anne in the
anime
The S.S. Anne, named the St. Anne in the dub, appeared in Battle Aboard the St. Anne and Pokémon Shipwreck.
Ash, Misty, and Brock boarded the ship after two schoolgirls, who were actually Jessie and James in disguise, offered them free tickets. This was part of a Team Rocket plot to steal the Pokémon of all Trainers on board. However, Ash and his friends enjoyed the St. Anne, which provided large amounts of food for people on board and allowed Pokémon battles below deck. While on board, James was swindled by the Magikarp salesman into buying a Magikarp in a gold-plated Poké Ball, and Ash traded his Butterfree to a Gentleman for a Raticate.
Out on the open ocean, Team Rocket, including Jessie, James, Meowth, and a number of Team Rocket Grunts began taking the Pokémon of everyone else on board the St. Anne by force. Ash led a counterattack against the Rockets, leading to a large battle and many of the members of Team Rocket being blasted off through the side of the ship.
Afterwards, the St. Anne started taking on water, and the passengers had to be evacuated. Ash delayed the evacuation to trade back the Raticate for his Butterfree, but the moment Ash obtained Butterfree's Poké Ball, the ship jerked and the Poké Ball bounces out of his hand, while at the same moment James's Magikarp's Poké Ball bounced out of his hand. When both Ash and James went back to go get their Poké Balls, the ship jerked once more and knocked out Ash, his friends, and the Team Rocket trio. When they awoke, the St. Anne was upside down and underwater, balancing on a seamount.
The two groups fought at first, but Misty took charge and began directing all of them in an emergency escape plan before the ship fell into the depths of the sea floor. Since the ship was upside down, they would need to escape through the thinnest point in its hull, which Misty knew was in the engine room, having built a model of the ship herself. They made their way through the ship to this point, and then Ash ordered his Charmander to burn a hole in the hull. With the help of Squirtle, Goldeen and Starmie, Ash and his friends were able to swim to safety, while Team Rocket nearly drowned since all they had to rely on was James's Magikarp, which could only Splash around on the floor.
Once everyone was off-board, the St. Anne's balance tilted, and it fell off the seamount, down towards the abyss, never to be seen again.

In The Search for the Legend, Ritchie rode aboard a ship called the S.S. Anne (instead of St. Anne) in the dub; the ship is unnamed in the original Japanese.
Pokémon Origins
The captain of the S.S. Anne briefly appeared in File 2: Cubone. He was seen giving Red HM01 (Cut) after he helped him recover from his seasickness.
In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
The S.S. Anne first appeared in Danger: High Voltorb and Buzz Off, Electabuzz! as a cargo ship that docked at Vermilion once every month. When Red heard that the citizens of Vermilion had been losing their Pokémon, he snuck aboard the ship and found out that the local Gym Leader, Lt. Surge, was behind the thefts and was using the ship to transport the stolen Pokémon away. After torturing Red with his Electric Pokémon, Surge tossed him overboard. However, Red was narrowly saved from drowning when his Poliwhirl unexpectedly evolved into Poliwrath, which then proceeded to defeat Lt. Surge's Electabuzz with Seismic Toss. Although the authorities failed to find and arrest Surge, the stolen Pokémon aboard the ship were still recovered.
In Long Live the Nidoqueen?!, Giovanni revealed that the S.S. Anne had been used to ship the Pokémon stolen by Team Rocket from Vermilion City to Viridian City, as a part of their plan to gather an unstoppable Pokémon army.
The S.S. Anne reappeared in The Primeape Directive, where Yellow boarded it as it was passing by Route 9. In The Coming of Slowpoke (Eventually), the ship, which was now a passenger ship instead of a cargo ship, was sabotaged by the Team Rocket Elite Trio, who exploded a bomb inside the ship and caused it to start sinking. Although Yellow was able to defeat the trio and save all of the passengers, the ship still sunk at the Vermilion Harbor.
Pokémon Zensho
The S.S. Anne appeared in PZ04, where Satoshi boarded the ship and met Shigeru, whom he beat in a battle. Afterwards, Satoshi encountered the ship's seasick captain, who asked him to find a sergeant who had served with him in the army. The man turned out to be Lt. Surge, who had lived years in belief that he had accidentally knocked a tall tree onto his fellow soldier. Said soldier was actually the captain of the S.S. Anne, who had saved himself with his Cut technique. As thanks for reuniting them, Satoshi received a Thunder Badge from Lt. Surge and HM01 (Cut) from the captain, before the two men set sail together aboard the cruise ship.
Trivia
Name origin
St. Annu (サント・アンヌ) is the name of the computer in Game Freak's Sega Mega Drive title Pulseman. The specific kana spelling used is a transliteration of the French Sainte Anne, which means "Saint Anne".
The Japanese word 号 gō, in this context, means "model"; however, it is a Japanese-only descriptor and is not meant to be translated. The English localization uses the equivalent "S.S.", short for steamship, and drops "St." from the name.
