Swinub (Japanese: ウリムー Urimoo) is a dual-type Ice/Ground Pokémon.

It evolves into Piloswine starting at level 33, which evolves into Mamoswine when leveled up while knowing AncientPower.

Biology

Physiology

Living in frigid temperatures, these Pokémon are covered in dense, brown-colored, striped hair to keep them warm. The hair is so shaggy that it often covers their tuft-like small legs, making them appear like a legless lump in shape. They use their pink, pig-like noses to dig through mud and snow, looking for anything edible. Swinub’s eyes seem perpetually closed in appearance.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Swinub are known for their ability to find underground springs. As an dual Ice- and Ground-type Pokémon, Swinub can also use a variety of moves from both types.

Behavior

This Pokémon is known to use its hardy and reliable nose to sniff out food. Occasionally, it will come across hot springs while scouring the ground. When a Swinub finds an attractive smell, it will run desperately to find out the source of the aroma.

Habitat

Swinub has been known to be found in icy areas, notably Ice Path and Route 217.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

This Pokémon's favorite food is a certain type of mushroom that grows under dead grass, although it also eats berries that it finds.

Trivia

Swinub's eyes in Pokémon Adventures
  • The only time that Swinub's eyes have been seen open was during the battle between Pryce and Erika in the Round Bringing up Bellossom from Pokémon Adventures when Pryce ordered his to dodge Erika's Skiploom's attack.
  • Swinub is one of the few Pokémon with the same sprite in both Gold and Silver.
  • Swinub's Shiny form has changed frequently; it was blue in Generation II, gray in Generation III, and has been green since Generation IV. However, the nose color always stayed the same.
  • Due to their unique typing, Swinub and its evolutionary family are the only Pokémon that are resistant to damage from all types of weather effects without the aid of an Ability. Of these, Swinub is the only one that can also be resistant to Shadow Sky.
  • Despite being introduced as a Ground-type in Generation II, it could not learn any Ground-type moves by level-up until Generation IV.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver coding, it is revealed that Swinub has Mud Shot listed as a "new HGSS" Egg move, but it could already learn this move by breeding since Generation III.
  • Swinub and its evolutions are the only Ice-type Pokémon in the brown color group.

Origin

Swinub's size and appearance seem to be based on a mix of a Peruvian guinea pig and a wild boar piglet. It may also be based on wordplay of the groundhog. Both are similar in characteristics and behavior, while "Ground hog" describes Swinub's type and species quite well.

Name origin

Swinub is a combination of swine and nub (referring to its lump-like nose).

Urimoo may be a combination of 瓜坊 uribō (a wild boar piglet) and ブーブー bū bū (an onomatopoeia for oinking).
