Hoothoot (Japanese: ホーホー Hoho) is a dual-typed Normal/Flying Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Hoothoot are round birds with very large, red eyes. Around these eyes are black rings. It has a crest on top which resembles the hands of a clock. Another notable feature is that it seems to only have one foot with four toes; however, it in fact has two feet, but one is usually hidden in its feathers underneath.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Being nocturnal, it has exceptional eyesight and hearing. It is capable of learning psychic attacks. It also has the innate ability to tell exactly what time it is.

Behavior

It is nocturnal, meaning that they are only active at night. It has an organ which works like a timepiece which allows Hoothoot to hoot at the same time each night.

Habitat

Hoothoot only come out at night, but are a very common sight anywhere in Johto or Sinnoh. Their nests are likely to be found in the trees of forests.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Hoothoot mainly feed off of Bug Pokémon.

In the anime

Both Gary Oak and Falkner, the Gym Leader of Violet City, have Hoothoot, although Gary's was a rental and was owned for one episode only. Hagatha and Nagatha from Illusion Confusion rent Hoothoot to trainers so they can get through a haunted forest.

Ash also borrowed a Hoothoot.

Wings Alexander used to have a Hoothoot before it evolved.

A Hoothoot chased Team Rocket while they were searching for Ho-Oh in some underground ruins in Battling the Enemy Within.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special

Hoothoot was seen used by a trickster in Template:PSV. He claimed to use Hoothoot as an accurate timekeeper to regulate a prize-winning game he was hosting, when in fact he was prompting Hoothoot to declare the time limit whenever a participant was on the verge of winning, thus preventing anyone from winning his game. He was busted, however, by Gold and his Aipom.

The same man and his Hoothoot are seen in Template:PSV and Template:PSV.

Trivia

  • Hoothoot's cry sounds the same as its name.
  • Hoothoot's sprite in Gold and Silver had white eyes, this was most likely because of the color limitations of the Gameboy Color.
  • When Hoothoot was first shown, many people thought that Hoothoot had only one foot before it was revealed that he was hiding its other foot.
  • Hoothoot and Noctowl are the only non-legendary Pokémon that can learn Psycho Shift by level.

Origin

It seems to be based on a combination of an owl and a clock, as its eyebrows are shaped like the hour and minute hands on a clock; in addition, it has the ability to keep track of time.

Hoothoot's appearance is based on that of the Japanese Eagle Owl, who were seen as wise, divine messengers of the gods.

Name origin

Hoothoot's name is simply onomatopoeia for the sound owls make.
