Jessie's Lickitung

Lickitung was first seen in Princess Versus Princess. Jessie captured it and used in the Princess Festival Tournament against Misty. After defeating Ash's Pikachu and Bulbasaur and Brock's Vulpix, it lost to Misty's Psyduck.

Jessie accidently traded her Lickitung for Benny's Wobbuffet in Tricks Of The Trade.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Lickitung is one of the Pokémon seen in Gold's house.

Later, in Volume 12, a quad of Lickitung becomes attracted by the scent of Crystal newly evolved Bayleef.

Other appearances

Super Smash Brothers Melee

Lickitung is a Pokéfloat. As fighting moves to the left, Lickitung will extend its tongue which must be used as a stepping stone to continue.

Pokédex entries

Its tongue can be extended like a chameleon's. It leaves a tingling sensation when it licks enemies.
Pokémon Yellow
Its tongue spans almost 7 feet and moves more freely than its forelegs. Its licks can cause paralysis.
Pokémon Gold
Its tongue has well-devoloped nerves that run to the very tip, so it can be deftly manipulated.
Pokémon Silver
Its long tongue, slathered with a thick gooey saliva, sticks to anything, so it is very useful.
Pokémon Crystal
It has a tongue that is over 6'6" long. It uses this long tongue to lick its body clean.
Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire
Whenever Lickitung comes across something new, it will unfailingly give it a lick. It does so because it memorizes things by texture and by taste. It is somewhat put off by sour things.
Pokémon Emerald
Whenever it sees something unfamiliar, it always licks the object because it memorizes things by texture and taste. It is somewhat put off by sour things.
Pokémon FireRed
Its tongue is twice the length of its body. It can be moved like an arm for grabbing food and attacking.
Pokémon Diamond
Instead of hands, it uses its tongue, which is twice its height. Its sticky saliva grips anything.

Trivia

  • Lickitung was originally to be called Tonguetyd but this changed before the release of the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue.
  • Ironically, even though it was repeatedly stated to attack using licks, it was not able to learn Lick until Generation II.

Origin

It may have been based on any number of lizards with extending tongues, in particular the fat-tailed gecko.

Name origin

Lickitung's name is a combination and corruption of lick and tongue. The bero in Beroringa may be from ベロ, tongue, or べろべろなめる berobero nameru, to lick up with one's tongue. Ringer is most likely derived from English ring, referring to the patterns on its body. The German name comes from the word slurp. Lickitung's French name seems to be a combination of excellent and tongue.

In other languages

  • German: Schlurp
  • French: Excelangue - Excellent means excellent, and langue means tongue. The word as a whole sounds like excellent.
  • Korean: 내루미 Naerumi
