Gastrodon (Japanese: トリトドン Tritodon) is a dual-type Water/Ground Pokémon.
It evolves from Shellos starting at level 30.
Like its pre-evolution, there are two forms of Gastrodon, West Sea (pink and brown) and East Sea (blue and green), found in the two halves of Sinnoh.
Biology
Physiology
Gastrodon is a Pokémon based on a sea slug, and appears much the same as its pre-evolution, but it gains six visible but stubby legs and is noticably larger. They both additionally have plain black eyes with white irses, with a third eye in the center of their forehead. Like Shellos, Gastrodon has two forms;
In the West Sea form, the flower-like crest it had as a Shellos has now turned into horns adorning the side of its head, which point directly upwards in a crescent moon shape. Its underside up to the bottom of its mouth is pink, its back and the top of its head is completely brown, and it has two with small protrusions on its back with several pink spots dotted around them. It also has two small protrusions on its neck underneath the horns, and it has a yellow border running down its body from its head, seperating the brown and the pink coloration.
In the East Sea form, it retains the horns it had as a Shellos, although now fully colored green which point at a 45 degree angle. Its underside up to the bottom of its mouth is blue, its back and the top of its head is completely green, and it has two yellow "fins" adorned on its back with a third bordering its side and rear, as well as two small blue spots between them. It has a yellow border running down its body from its head, seperating the blue and the green coloration.
Gastrodon and its pre-evolution Shellos are examples of allopatric speciation, though they are still able to breed.

Trivia
- According to an interview in Nintendo Power with Ken Sugimori, Shellos and Gastrodon were originally designed for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but were not implemented in the final design.
- Both Shellos and Gastrodon have a beta back sprite in the game data; however, there are no front sprites for these forms, and neither can be captured in this form.
- These beta forms both are similar to the pink, West Sea variations of Shellos and Gastrodon, possibly meaning that they were developed from the Generation III versions. This is fitting, as all regions from before Generation IV are west of Mt. Coronet.
- In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, no in-game Trainer uses East Sea Gastrodon in battle, even if the Trainer's current location is east of Mt. Coronet. This changes in Pokémon Platinum.
- Gastrodon's Platinum Pokédex entry states that "long ago, its entire back was shielded with a sturdy shell." Interestingly, the same beta backsprite mentioned above depicts it with a rock-like shell, covering its entire back.
- In Double Team Turnover!, its Pokédex entry specifically refers to it having a "sturdy shell."
- Gastrodon is classified as a purple Pokémon in the Pokédex, which is fitting, as purple is the color that results from mixing the primary colors of both its forms, pink and blue.
Origin
Gastrodon is based on a sea slug, perhaps specifically that in the order, Opisthobranchia. The East Sea Gastrodon seems to be based on a Sea Hare. Though Gastrodon is unable to extract poisonous ink in a move form that it can learn naturally (though it can learn Slime Wave, Sludge Bomb, Sludge and Clear Smog by TMs, and from being fathered by members of other Pokémon species).
Name origin
Gastrodon's name is derived from "gastropod," the zoological category slugs and snails belong to, and "don," a Spanish honorific meaning leader or king, or in other words, king of snails and slugs. It may also be derived from a particular species of sea slug by the title of "Gastropteron"
The name Tritodon is derived from Tritoniidae. It may also come from the fact that eastern Gastrodon look like cows or oxen. The word Torito is Spanish for "little bull." Its name might mean "royal ox snail," referring to its strength.
