Jellicent (Japanese: ブルンゲル Burungel) is a dual-type Water/Ghost Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Frillish starting at level 40.

Biology

Physiology

Gender differences

While male Jellicent are mostly blue, females are majorly pink in color, have two eyelashes, a visible red mouth that resembles a heart, frills on their tentacles, a tall crown, and a puffy collar around their heads. Males have one eyelash over each eye, mustache-like collars around their heads, no frills on their tentacles and a shorter crown on their heads.

Special abilities

It can absorb seawater then project it from its head.

Behavior

It moves forward by vigorously blowing out the seawater absorbed into its body. Any ship or crew that wanders into a Jellicent's habitat is never found again, which suggests that it can and will prey on humans, added to the fact that like many Ghost-type Pokémon, it feeds on life energy. The disappearance of ships in Jellicent's domain may also be a sign of territoriality.

Habitat

They live in the depths of the ocean.

Diet

Trivia

Dream World artwork of female Jellicent
  • Although female Dream World artwork exists, any Frillish or Jellicent uploaded to the Global Link will use the male artwork, regardless of their gender.
  • No Pokémon have the same type combination as Jellicent and its pre-evolution.
  • Jellicent and its pre-evolution, along with Unfezant are the only Generation V Pokémon that have gender differences.
    • Jellicent and Unfezant are also the only Pokémon (with the obvious exception of the Nidoran family) whose gender differences are visible in their minisprites.
  • Despite the fact that the species of Jellicent and its pre-evolution is Floating Pokémon, and that Frillish has been seen floating in the anime, they don't have the ability Levitate. Levitate and the pair's species have the same Japanese name.

Origin

Jellicent and its pre-evolution were most likely inspired by the Nurarihyon, a jellyfish youkai that is either shown as a demonized jellyfish or as a jellyfish-like man who wears refined, sometimes regal, clothing. It is also possible that they was inspired by the Kurage no Hinotama, a sort of jellyfish-like will-o'-the-wisp. Its design is inspired by the jellyfish, in particular the Crown Jellyfish, and monarch attire; the male form's appearance based on a king's while the female's is based on a queen's. The Moon Jellyfish may have influence on Jellicent being a ghost type. Its dangerous ability to prey on humans, in self-defense of its habitat, is possibly based on the Box jellyfish and other, highly venomous species of jellyfish that can kill humans.

Name origin

Jellicent is a combination of jellyfish and magnificent. Burungel is a combination of ブルー burū, blue, and エンジェル enjeru, angel; a reference to sea angels.
