Fake Out (Japanese: ねこだまし Slap Hands) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation III.

Effect

Generation III

Fake Out inflicts damage and always makes the target flinch, unless it has the Ability Inner Focus or Shield Dust. It has a priority of +1, so is used before all moves that do not have increased priority.

Fake Out will fail if not used on the first turn the user is out. In wild battles, it won't fail if the player's Pokémon tries to escape, but fails to do so due to the Speed difference. Fake Out does not make contact.

Fake Out can also be used as part of a Pokémon Contest combination, with certain moves (Arm Thrust, Faint Attack, Knock Off, Seismic Toss, and Vital Throw) having their base appeal points doubled if they are used in the next turn.

Generation IV

Fake Out now makes contact.

Generation V onward

Fake Out now has +3 priority. In a Rotation Battle, Fake Out can be used on the first turn the Pokémon is rotated in—being out of its Poké Ball but currently rotated out does not affect a Pokémon's ability to use Fake Out.

When used on a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon successfully, Fake Out deals damage but will not make the target flinch.

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Fake Out is a move with 8 base power, 88% accuracy, and 17 PP. The user attacks enemy in the front, from up to 2 tiles away, even if there's an ally inbetween. Unlike in main series, it is not guaranteed to cause cringing.

In Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, the move's PP has been decreased to 10 and its accuracy to 80%.

  • This move is the first Generation III move in index number order.
  • Its Japanese name, ねこだまし Neko Damashi (Slap Hands), refers to a sumo technique used at the start of a match to make the opponent close their eyes. Its wide distribution among catlike Pokémon is likely a play on this name, as it literally translates to cat deception.
  • Fake Out has the highest priority of all damage-dealing moves, excluding Pursuit used against a target being switched out and an HP-draining move used by a Pokémon with Triage.
  • Excluding Fling with a King's Rock or Razor Fang, Fake Out is the only move with a 100% chance of causing the target to flinch.
