Drednaw is a large Pokémon resembling a turtle. Its carapace (upper shell) is brown and is divided into three segments, and has a yellow section around it. Its plastron (lower shell) and its lower jaw is flat and are pale yellow. Its head has a yellow horn on it and has two large sections coming off of it. Its eyes are white and somewhat rectangle shaped with small pupils. Connecting its head to its lower jaw are two yellow circles. Its front legs have one large yellow protrusion each, and each of its feet have three white toes. Its tail is long and has two spikes coming off of it.
Drednaw's sharp jagged fangs are powerful enough to chomp on rock, iron, and steel rods. It can move very fast despite how extremely heavy the shell on its back is. This highly aggressive Pokémon can extend its neck very quickly to chomp down on its enemies. Drednaw are notoriously vicious to the point it requires a skilled Trainer to fully tame and handle it. Some Trainers will release Drednaw into the wild once they find they are unable to handle it.[1]
Gigantamax Drednaw is now bipedal and its horn resembles a tank. Its tail is now longer and has more spikes, and now has three yellow spikes coming off each leg. Its plastron has three protrusions, with the middle being the longest. Its head is hidden inside of its body, and its eyes glow red. Like all Gigantamax Pokémon, Drednaw has red clouds as they spin in and out of its shell.
In its Gigantamax transformation, it stands on it hind legs in a bipedal position. Drednaw uses its massive body to crush its opponents and then its massive jaws to finish them off. The power of its jaws has been enhanced to the point where it can bite through metal towers. By combining the strength of its jaws and powerful neck, Drednaw is capable of punching a hole through a mountain with one strike. According to one tale, Drednaw stopped a flood by using the rubble from a mountain it chewed up.[2]
Drednaw debuted in Flash of the Titans!. Team Rocket spotted Drednaw after leaving Wyndon Stadium and decided to catch it for Giovanni. Using the Bellsprout they received from the Rocket Prize Master, Team Rocket attempted to catch Drednaw, only for Bellsprout's attack to hit the ground, opening a hole that engulfed Drednaw in a red light, causing it to Gigantamax. This resulted in Drednaw going out of control and attacking the stadium.
It reappeared in The Climb to Be the Very Best!, where it continued to attack the Stadium, only to be confronted by Ash and Goh, who tried to battle it. Their attacks had no effect on Drednaw until Pikachu became engulfed in red light, causing it to Gigantamax and therefore giving it enough power to defeat Drednaw.
Drednaw may be based on the common snapping turtle, with some of its characteristics being apparently derived from the alligator snapping turtle. Its horn resembles a cleaver, and its Gigantamax form resembles a dreadnought. Its boat-like underside, most noticeable in its Gigantamax form, and armored top makes it resemble early ironclad warships, which were built from the hulls of wooden ships and plated with thick steel sheets.
Name origin
Drednaw may be a combination of dread and gnaw. It may also be a play on dreadnought (a type of warship).
Kajirigame may be a combination of 齧り付く kajiritsuku (to bite into) and 亀 kame (turtle).
