Pidgeot (Japanese: ピジョット Pigeot) is a dual-typed Normal/Flying Pokémon. It is the fully evolved form of Pidgey, one of the most common Pokémon in the Generation I and Generation II games.

Pidgeot can come with the ability Keen Eye, which prevents accuracy reduction, or the ability Tangled Feet, which increases evasion when Pidgeot is confused. Pidgeot evolves from Pidgeotto starting at level 36.

Biology

Physiology

Pidgeot bares striking resemblance to Pidgeotto; however, Pidgeot is noticeably larger than is pre-evolution. Its plumage tends to be larger and glossier. The feathers on its head-crest are nearly as long as its body, and are yellow and red. Its tail feathers are red colored. Like its previous evolutions, its underbelly is a tan color, and it has black markings around its eyes.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Pidgeot is a powerful flier, capable of creating whirlwinds strong enough to bend trees. It can reach speeds of Mach 2.

Behavior

Pidgeot are normally calm and confident in their abilities. It has many powerful attacks, and beautiful plumage, making it a popular choice for skilled trainers.

Habitat

Pidgeot typically dwell in forests with thick growth and large trees.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Pidgeot seems to primarily subsist on a diet of fish and Template:Type2 Pokémon which it fishes out of the water using its high speed and keen senses. However, like all Pokémon, it is also capable of surviving by eating apples and Berries.

In the anime

Ash Ketchum had a Pidgeot that he captured as a Pidgeotto early in his journey. After a single battle with an aggressive Fearow, Pidgeot left Ash's party to watch over a local flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto. Ash promised to return for it someday, but so far he has not kept that promise.

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Pidgeot was captured and cloned by Mewtwo. It was referred to as a Pidgeotto due to a dubbing error.

A Pidgeot belonging to Rudy appeared in Misty Meets Her Match.

In Bound for Trouble, Pidgeot that were twice their normal size appeared. Their size was due to there being excessive quantities of food on one of the Orange Islands. One of these oversized Pidgeot snatches up Meowth and Pikachu when they got tethered together.

Falkner of the Violet City Gym owns a Pidgeot.

In Hoenn Alone, an Officer Jenny used a Pidgeot to help locate Ash's Pikachu after it was stolen by Team Rocket.

A Pidgeot is used in PokéRinger Contest.

A Pidgeot was owned by Sir Aaron in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Also, Mew transformed into a Pidgeot in the movie.

One is also used by the coordinator Solidad.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Green owns a Pidgeot that was one of the earliest members of his team. It now resides in the Viridian Gym as one of its defenders.

In Pokémon Zensho, Shigeru had a Pidgeot he used to attack Satoshi while he was flying on his Charizard.

Trivia

  • Pidgeot originally had an extra "t" in its name, but it was dropped.
  • There is an error on Pidgeot's Generation II and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald backsprites. The 'hair' on its head is shorter than it is on the front sprite.
  • It is one of the few Pokémon whose shiny sprites changed colors; in Generation II, Pidgeot's shiny was all green with orange tail/feathers, in Generation III the whole body changed to gold.
  • Pidgeot is one of the few Pokémon whose back sprites are different between Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen.

Origin

Despite its name, its appearance and behavior do not resemble a pigeon so much as that of a bird of prey, particularly an osprey.

Name origin

Its name may just be a variation of pigeon, but depending on how one pronounces it, the word jet may be incorporated into its name.

In other languages

  • German: Tauboss - a combination of Taube, German for pigeon and the English word boss.
  • French: Roucarnage - Roucoule means coo, and carnage is the same as in English.
  • Korean: 피죤투 Pijontu
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 比雕 Bî Diao - Transliteration of the first part of its Japanese name, Pigeot. The last character means eagle.
  • Chinese (Hong Kong): 大比鳥 Dái Bî Nîao - In relation to the name of its pre-evolved form, Pidgeotto, this name literally means 'big Pidgeotto'.
