Dodrio (Japanese: ドードリオ Dodorio) is a dual-typed Normal/Flying Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Dodrio are bird Pokémon with three heads. They have very small wings hidden under the fluffy brown feathers that cover their black underside. Because their wings are so small, they have little to no flying ability, but can jump incredibly high. Dodrio's long legs allow it to deal devastating kicks, but only frontward. However, to protect its back, one of the necks can turn around and fiercely peck the opponent.

Gender differences

A female Dodrio has brown necks instead of black ones.

Special abilities

Dodrio have long legs which allow it to jump incredibly high, which almost subsitutes the ability of flying. These legs also allow it to run up to speeds of 75 MPH. The only Pokémon that can beat dodrio in a race is Rapidash. Dodrio also has three brains this can come in handy to execute intricate plans to out wit foes. Therefore meaning dodrio is incredibly intelligent. The three beaks it has also is to it's advantage when it comes to defence for it can deliver devastating blows with the sharp beaks.

In the anime

Dodrio first appeared in Pokémon, I Choose You!, where it has a brief appearance, while shouting its cry to the rising sun like a rooster. Its next appearance was in The Flame Pokémon-athon. Dario used the three-headed bird to compete in a race, but was beaten by Ash who was riding Lara Laramie's Ponyta, after it evolved into Rapidash.

Dodrio also made a cameo in A Chansey Operation. This Dodrio had its necks tied in a knot.

Falkner, the Gym Leader of Violet City, used a Dodrio to battle Ash in Fighting Flyer with Fire.

Gary Oak's Doduo evolved into a Dodrio some time before Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl. Gary used it to attack Team Rocket's helicopter when they made a second attempt to capture Aerodactyl.

Dodrio was used in DP072 by Ash, Hajime, Dawn and Brock to get to the Riolu that J had kidnapped.

In the manga

Yellow's Doduo evolved into Dodrio in Template:PSV of Pokémon Special. It was seen again in Template:PSV, managing to save Pika and Template:P2 from a surfing accident.

Stadium The three heads express joy, sorrow and anger as they plan strategy together. When it sleeps, one head remains awake.
Generation II
Gold It collects data and plans three times as wisely, but it may think too much and become immobilized.
Silver If one of the heads gets to eat, the others will be satisfied, too, and they will stop squabbling.
Crystal An enemy that takes its eyes off any of the three heads--even for a second--will get Template:M2 severely.
Stadium 2 It collects data and plans three times as wisely, but it may think too much and become immobilized.
Generation III
Ruby Watch out if Dodrio's three heads are looking in three separate directions. It's a sure sign that it is on its guard. Don't go near this Pokémon if it's being wary - it may decide to peck you.
Sapphire Apparently, the heads aren't the only parts of the body that Dodrio has three of. It has three sets of hearts and lungs as well, so it is capable of running long distances without rest.
Emerald A peculiar Pokémon species with three heads. It vigorously races across grassy plains even in arid seasons with little rainfall.
FireRed An odd species that is rarely found. The three heads respectively represent joy, sadness, and anger.
LeafGreen Uses its three brains to execute complex plans. While two heads sleep, one head is said to stay awake.

Trivia

Origin

Despite its name, it seems like it has more in common with ostriches than dodos.

Name origin

Dodrio's name seems to be a combination of dodo, an extinct, flightless, bird, and trio, meaning a group of three. The dori in its Japanese name may also come from 鳥 tori, bird, or it may be a combination of ドードー dodo and トリオ trio because of its three heads.
