Ogerpon (Japanese: オーガポン Ogerpon) is a Grass-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IX, with The Teal Mask.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Ogerpon has four forms, depending on the mask it's wearing, which also changes its typing. Each mask also gives Ogerpon a unique Terastallized state when it Terastallizes.

Teal Mask Ogerpon is the game mascot of The Teal Mask, appearing in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero.

Biology

Ogerpon is a small, green humanoid Pokémon. It has a green torso with white flowers and yellow dots and long black legs with two toes on each foot. Between its toes are sprouts with two leaves. A green, leafy cloak-like structure extends from its head, the neck of which appears to be a large, thorny vine. Two thorns stick out prominently from the top, resembling two large horns, a large leaf growing out behind them. This "cloak" moves as if Ogerpon has arms underneath it, but a close look at its jumping animation shows that Ogerpon has neither arms or even shoulders, making the "cloak" actually a prehensile extension of its head that allows it to grab and manipulate objects via the large "sleeves" (as well as giving space to store its masks). Underneath the mask it usually wears, Ogerpon has an orange face, and yellow eyes shaped like a star. In battle, it wields a large, spiky cudgel wrapped in ivy. Ogerpon is a female-only species with no male counterpart.

Ogerpon and its former companion were shunned by the people of Kitakami due to their strange appearance, and so they lived in a nearby mountain, isolated from the villagers. The village mask-maker took pity on the pair and crafted four beautiful masks for them, allowing them to blend in with the people during the village festival. However, their fame attracted three greedy Pokémon: Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti, who attacked Ogerpon's companion in their cave while Ogerpon was away, stealing all but the Teal Mask and leaving no trace of the companion when Ogerpon returned. Filled with rage, Ogerpon attacked and defeated the three Pokémon in the village, but its anger caused the villagers to fear it even more. Thus, Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti were immortalized by the unaware villagers as the Loyal Three, while Ogerpon was left alone in its cave, saddened by the events that had transpired. It mainly resides in the Dreaded Den. There is a myth that Ogerpon will supposedly steal the souls of humans without masks late at night.

Ogerpon has a curious and mischievous personality. It enjoys spending time with humans while wearing a mask to blend in. It can confuse foes with its nimble movements and kicks. Ogerpon can draw power from the masks it wears, granting it different elements for its cudgel to use. Ogerpon can become weaker should any of its masks get stolen. Returning the mask can restore Ogerpon's full power. As seen in its idle and attack animations, Ogerpon stores its masks and cudgel under its cloak. It also has been alive for hundreds of years.

Ogerpon is the only Pokémon capable of using the move Ivy Cudgel.

Forms

Ogerpon has four forms, each with its own special Terastallized state. Unlike other Pokémon, Ogerpon is incapable of having its Tera Type changed at the Treasure Eatery. Instead, its Tera Type is determined by which mask it is currently wearing.

Teal Mask

Teal Mask Ogerpon's mask is a teal color with a mischievous expression. Its mouth is tan, sporting two protrusions from the chin that resemble pincers. On both sides of the mouth are three large green leaves that are larger than each one below. On top of the mask are 5 teal leaves fanned out to form a kind of crown, with the outer four having holes cut out towards the center. 9 Tera Crystals adorn the mask, a 4-sided star-shaped one in the center of its crown, six more in the center of each leaf on the side of its mask, and two more used as eyes. It draws on the power of grass through the Teal Mask.

In its Terastallized state, Ogerpon's mask becomes bigger, completely covering all but its legs. The Mask itself floats in front of Ogerpon during the battle. The black part of the mouth mask opens up more. The star crystal changes into having the Terastal Symbol at the entrance as two Ogre horn-shaped Tera crystals grow out of the head. The lower three large green leaves change to bright green. Behind the mask is several bright green leaves and spit vines growing out of it. This form will always have a Grass Tera Type.

This mask it wears is described as being fearsome[1]. With the Teal Mask, Ogerpon can bring life back to any withered green surrounding it.

Wellspring Mask

Wellspring Mask Ogerpon's mask is blue with a crying expression. It is heart-shaped, with a white face, closed eyes light blue eyebrows. 2 Tera crystals adorn the mask, and two tear-shaped ones under its eyes. While in this form, Ogerpon's leafy cloak turns white and blue, and the tip of its cudgel turns blue. It draws on the power of water through the Wellspring Mask.

In its Terastallized state, Ogerpon's mask becomes bigger, completely covering all but its legs. The Mask itself floats in front of Ogerpon during the battle. Blue hair grows from the top of the mask. One of the tear crystals changes into having the Terastal Symbol at the center as two Ogre horn-shaped Tera crystals grow out of the head. Behind the mask, several bright blue watery waves grow out of it. This form will always have a Water Tera Type.

With its Wellspring Mask, Ogerpon can stop the flow of a river. Wellspring Mask excels in both attack and defense. It can unleash attacks ceaselessly like the gushes of spring water. It can attack with unrelenting kicks and ivy strikes.

Hearthflame Mask

Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon's mask is a red and yellow color with a fierce expression. It has a fiery look, and its mouth is blue with two white fangs sticking out of it, similarly to the Teal Mask, it also possesses a crown, but fire-looking. 3 Tera crystals adorn the mask, two used as eyes and a 4-pointed star-shaped one on the center of its head. While in this form, Ogerpon's leafy cloak turns yellow and red, and the tip of its cudgel turns red. It draws on the power of fire through the Hearthflame Mask.

In its Terastallized state, Ogerpon's mask becomes bigger, completely covering all but its legs. The Mask itself floats in front of Ogerpon during the battle. The blue mouth opens up widely. The star crystal changes into having the Terastal Symbol at the center as two Ogre horn-shaped Tera crystals grow out of the head. Behind the mask, several bright yellow fiery flames grow out of it. This form will always have a Fire Tera Type.

With its Hearthflame Mask, Ogerpon can turn a candle's flame into raging infernos. It has a more aggressive personality when wearing the mask. It can bomb its enemies with the intensity of a hearth's flame. It also spears enemies with its thorn-covered ivy.

Cornerstone Mask

Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon's mask is gray and black with a crazy expression. It has a rocky look, it has a wide mouth with two long, black fangs sticking out of it, it has wide yellow eyes and a weird-shaped, blue mustache around its nose. 5 Tera crystals adorn the mask, two as pupils and three as its teeth. While in this form, Ogerpon's leafy cloak turns black and gray, and the tip of its cudgel turns grey. can draw on the power of stone through the Cornerstone Mask.

In its Terastallized state, Ogerpon's mask becomes bigger, completely covering all but its legs. The Mask itself floats in front of Ogerpon during the battle. The already large mouth opens wider. One of the pupil crystals changes into having the Terastal Symbol at the center as two Ogre horn-shaped Tera crystals grow out of the head. Behind the mask, long black hair grows out of it. This form will always have a Rock Tera Type.

With its Cornerstone Mask, Ogerpon can break even the hardest stone in two. This form of Ogerpon has an amazing defense, capable of impacts easily. This defense is similar to the cornerstones that help support houses. Due to this rocky solid body, Ogerpon is protected from all manner of attacks.

Trivia

  • With a total of four battles, Ogerpon can be fought the most out of any Legendary Pokémon in one playthrough.

Origin

Ogerpon may be based on oni, creatures from Japanese folklore that often are referred to as demons or ogres in English. In particular, it may be based off the oni who live on Onigashima from the story of Momotarō. Its plant-based body and orange fruit-like face may be a pun on Momotarō himself, the peach boy. It may also be inspired by onikenbai, or Devil's Sword Dance, a traditional festival and dance in Kitakami, Iwate. Another inspiration may be Namahage, which received Mochi from households in the 20th centruy but nowadays give away Mochi, which ties to the Ogre Oustin' minigame and the Mochi which can be gotten there. The Cornerstone Mask could be based on Onigawara, roof ornamentations with the face of an Oni. Its cudgel appears to be based on a kanabō, a type of club often wielded by oni in myths.

Its face resembles dekopon, a variety of orange. It also appears to be based on ivy, although its thorny appearance is more similar to plants like bramble bushes.

Name origin

Ogerpon may be derived from ogre and ponkan or dekopon, as well as ~ぽん -pon, a cutesy suffix applied to names as a form of endearment.
