Purugly (Japanese: ブニャット Bunyatto) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Purugly looks like a big gray and white cat, with a tail similar to Glameow. It is significantly fatter than Glameow, and as thus no longer can possess the Limber ability. It still has a crescent-shaped head. Its ears are pointed and purple-colored. It has whiskers with a zigzag like pattern at the end of them. The frilly portion of its tail is now forked, but it usually keeps it clasped around its waist.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Despite appearing very sluggish, when angered, Purugly will not be reluctant to attack and can be quite fast.
Their large bodies can offer them protection against cold and heat.
Being fully evolved Pokémon, they can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.
Behavior
Purugly attempt to make themselves look larger and more intimidating than they actually are. They do this by cinching their waists with their forked tails. They barge into the nests of other Pokémon and claim them for themselves.
Habitat
Purugly nest in both urban areas and heavily wooded forests. They are also known to frighten off other Pokémon simply to claim their nests as their own.

Trivia
- Speed is Purugly's highest stat, in spite of what its bulky appearance would suggest.
- Purugly's color palette was changed slightly in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, despite it being a non-Johto Pokémon. This also happened to Glameow, Registeel, Torterra, Chimchar, Stunky, Skuntank, and Chatot.
- Purugly is the only Pokémon with a 452 base stat total.
Origin
Purugly is based on a wild tiger cat, though its appearance is closer to an overweight tabby cat. Although in Japanese, "toraneko" both mean tiger cat and tabby cat.
Name origin
Its English name comes from the words "purr" and "ugly". Its Japanese name may be derived from a combination of デブ debu, fat, にゃ nya, meow, and the English word "cat" (キャット). Although considering the English name is Purugly, it is also likely the "bu" in Bunyatto comes from the word busaiku (不細工), which means "ugly".
In other languages
- German: Shnurgarst - From schnurren (to purr) and garstig (rough).
- French: Chaffreux - From chat (cat) and affreux (horrid).
- Korean: 몬냥이 Monnyang-i
- Chinese (Taiwan): 東施喵 Dōng Shī Māo - 東施 comes from the idiom 東施效顰 Dōngshī xiào pín (fig. crude imitation with ludricous effect). Its origin is about an ugly woman, who later earned the nickname "東施" for attempting to imitate 西施 Xī Shī, an extremely beautiful woman. 喵 is the onomatopoetic sound of a cat.
