Swadloon (Japanese: クルマユ Kurumayu) is a dual-type Bug/Grass Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Sewaddle starting at level 20 and evolves into Leavanny when leveled up with high happiness.

Biology

Physiology

Swadloon is a round, yellow Pokémon inside of a cocoon of leaves, which it drapes around itself, and is able to see through a crescent slit in the leaves. Under its "blanket" are darker green limp leaves which trail under its body. The top of the cocoon has two crests connected joined together at the bottom to form a "v" shape, and appear to be the Pokémon's antennae. On its back are the veins of the leaf as well as its stumpy tail.

Trivia

Origin

Swadloon is based on the caterpillar of the Epargyreus clarus during chrysalis. Epargyreus clarus fold leaves over themselves for shelter as they age and, when cocooning, eventually use silk to stick the leaves together and form its chrysalis. The appearance of Swadloon hiding in its blanket bears some resemblance to the stereotypical portrayal of people suffering from Hikikomori (acute social anxiety disorder) syndrome in Japanese media. Its evolution to Leavanny (whose Japanese name is two kana away from Hikikomori) being caused by happiness may also be a lesson.

Name origin

Swadloon is possibly a combination of swaddle, meaning to wrap a baby in cloth (in this case, leaves), and cocoon or balloon. It may also invoke loom, a machine used to weave fabric, or pantaloons, a term for loose-fitting trousers .

Kurumayu is likely a combination of 包む kurumu, to wrap up, and 繭 mayu, cocoon.
