Doduo (Japanese: ドードー Dodo) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Dodrio starting at level 31.

Biology

Physiology

This avian has two heads, which work together to get things done. The two heads are connected by two separate black or brown necks. It can run at high speed and can fly by using its two tiny wings.

Gender differences

A female has brown necks, while a male has black ones.

Special abilities

It can run at sixty miles per hour, and one head is always awake and alert.

Behavior

The heads of a Doduo appear to be quite keen with each other; they use a type of 'teamwork' to get things done and to survive. For example, while running, Doduo can be seen alternately rising and lowering their heads. They do this to balance themselves while running at extreme speeds. This Pokémon also appears to be quite cautious, the heads take turns sleeping while the other one watches for enemies.

Habitat

Doduo live in wide open plains, grasslands, and savannahs. They rarely live in forests but are sometimes found in scrublands and deserts. They are common in Kanto and Hoenn, but have been seen in Sinnoh from time to time.

Major appearances

Minor appearances

Doduo's first appearance was a cameo at Professor Oak's labratory in Showdown at the Poké Corral, belonging to Gary Oak. It eventually evolved into a Dodrio.

In Bad to the Bone, Otoshi tried to fight off Team Rocket with a Doduo, but he was failing miserably until his Marowak decided to return.

A male one also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

Trivia

  • Doduo's English name was originally going to be the same as the Japanese one, "Dodo".
  • Even though Doduo is based on the dodo, a flightless bird, and is also said to have poor flying skills, it can still learn the move Fly. It shares a similar trait with Qwilfish, who can learn Surf despite being called a poor swimmer.
    • However, it has been mentioned in the anime that Doduo can jump high enough to stay in the air for a period of time, as Fly is shown in-game.
    • Doduo can also learn Steel Wing, despite not having any visible wings.
  • Doduo and Dodrio are the only Pokémon that receive the ability Run Away that aren't in the Ground Egg Group.
  • Before Generation IV, the normal necks of Doduo were black (the male), while its evolution's neck is the color of the female's.
  • While many of its Pokédex entries mention its poor flight skills, none of them actually declare any sort of inability to fly.

Origin

Despite its name, it seems like it has more in common with ostriches than dodos. It also seems to show some similarity to the Moa, an extinct flightless bird, and the Emu, another flightless bird. It also resembles the Kiwi in some ways as well.

Name origin

Doduo's name seems to be a combination of dodo, an extinct, flightless bird, and duo, meaning a pair. Its Japanese name is simply Dodo.
