In the manga

Silver's Seadra evolved into Kingdra when he traded it to Gold for Poliwhirl, which also evolved. The two then traded back, so that each would have his original, though evolved, Pokémon.

Gold It is said that it usually hides in underwater caves. It can create whirlpools by yawning.
Silver It sleeps deep on the ocean floor to build its energy. It is said to cause tornadoes as it wakes.
Crystal It stores energy by sleeping at underwater depths at which no other life forms can survive.

Generation III
Ruby Kingdra lives at extreme ocean depths that are otherwise uninhabited. It has long been believed that the yawning of this Pokémon creates spiraling ocean currents.
Sapphire Kingdra sleeps on the seafloor where it is otherwise devoid of life. When a storm arrives, the Pokémon is said to awaken and wander about in search of prey.
Emerald It sleeps quietly, deep on the seafloor. When it comes up to the surface, it creates a huge whirlpool that can swallow even ships.
FireRed It sleeps deep on the ocean floor to build its energy. It is said to cause Template:M2 as it wakes.
LeafGreen It is said that it usually hides in underwater caves. It can create whirlpools by yawning.

Trivia

  • Kingdra is the only non-legendary, fully evolved Template:Type2 Pokémon not to have a double weakness to Ice (or indeed, any weakness to ice).
  • Kingdra is the only non-legendary, fully evolved Template:Type2 Pokémon that cannot learn Flamethrower.
  • Kingdra was the first Dragon-type Pokémon not to be part of the Dratini evolution family.
  • Though it was initially the only Pokémon with its type combination, new Uber Palkia shares its type as of Generation IV.
  • Kingdra is one of two BL Dragon-types, the other being Flygon.

Origin

Kingdra is based on a weedy sea dragon.

Name origin

Kingdra's name is a combination of king and dragon. Its German name, Seedraking, comes from See, Drache and king. Its French name, Hyporoi, comes from hippocampe and roi.
