Toxapex (Japanese: ドヒドイデ Dohidoide) is a dual-type Poison/Water Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Mareanie starting at level 38.

Biology

Toxapex is a small Pokémon with large, starfish-like tentacles sprouting from the top of its head. It has bright blue eyes with yellow sclerae and pupils. Its main body is a dark purple and consists of two sections: its head and lower body. Its head turns dark blue on top where the tentacles connect, and its lower body has triangular protrusions extending in all directions. Additionally, its body is typically suspended due to the length of its tentacles.

The tentacles themselves are light blue on top and covered with spines and dark blue with pinkish-purple spines on the undersides. When the inner spikes are present, the outer spikes sink back into its tentacles, and vice versa. The tip of each tentacle has two yellow claws, and there is a ring of yellow spines around a pinkish-purple marking where all the tentacles meet on top.

Toxapex uses its 12 tentacles as legs to walk along the ocean floor, where it hunts for Corsola. They can also be used to create a dome-like shelter from the tides. Its spines can be fired at enemies and carry a powerful poison, which causes pain for 72 hours (3 days). Aftereffects of the venom remain even after recovery. If a foe bypasses its spines, it attacks with its claws instead.

Toxapex is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Baneful Bunker.

Sun Toxapex crawls along the ocean floor on its 12 legs. It leaves a trail of Corsola bits scattered in its wake.
Moon Those attacked by Toxapex's poison will suffer intense pain for three days and three nights. Post-recovery, there will be some aftereffects.
Ultra Sun To attack, this Pokémon sends toxic spikes flying at its enemies. Ones that come close get mown down by the claws on its feet.
Ultra Moon With its 12 legs, it creates a dome to shelter within. The flow of the tides doesn't affect Toxapex in there, so it's very comfortable.
Generation VIII Galar

Sword To survive in the cold waters of Galar, this Pokémon forms a dome with its legs, enclosing its body so it can capture its own body heat.
Shield Within the poison sac in its body is a poison so toxic that Pokémon as large as Wailord will still be suffering three days after it first takes effect.

Trivia

  • Toxapex's evolution from Mareanie also has the greatest standard deviation of all Pokémon, with 45.72, meaning that the changes to its base stats on evolving are the most uneven of all Pokémon.

Origin

Toxapex may be based on a crown-of-thorns starfish, which is a carnivorous predator that preys on reef coral polyps (similar to how Toxapex preys on Corsola).

Name origin

Toxapex may be a combination of toxic and apex.

Dohidoide may be a combination of ど酷い dohidoi (very cruel) and 海星 hitode (sea star).
